Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 4A - Additional Information

Meca began fiscal 2021 under unprecedented circumstances, with the covid-19 pandemic, and subsequent public health restrictions, strictly limiting the size of events that could be safely held at either of its facilities. The authority worked closed with the douglas county health department (dchd) to host a limited number of gatherings at greatly reduced capacities, with numerous safety precautions in place. As the fiscal year progressed and pandemic constraints loosened across the city and state, meca's business experienced a gradual return to normalcy within the 4th quarter, from april to june of 2021. Chi health center omaha arena operations were among the first to be suspended in the covid-19 pandemic and among the last to be resumed sustaining major financial disruption in fiscal 2021. All nationally touring concerts and events were either postponed or canceled, and creighton university substantially decreased attendance at regular-season home basketball games, capping ticket sales between 10% and 40% of venue capacity as the year progressed. In light of these events (or lack thereof), meca opted to reduce chi health center omaha suite license billings by 40%, arena sponsorships by 50%, platinum club seat licenses by 75% and silver club seat licenses by 100% for the contracted year. As a result of this gesture, meca ultimately experienced a 49% decline of premium seating revenues and advertising sponsorship incomes in the fiscal year. Fortunately, arena business did return in the last quarter (with some modifications), welcoming events such as disney on ice, the ncaa division i women's volleyball championship tournament and the (rescheduled) 2021 usa olympic team trials for swimming. The chi health center omaha convention center was quicker to resume business in fiscal 2020-2021 due to its size and ability to accommodate social distancing. During the fiscal year, over 100 thousand guests utilized meca's meeting and exhibition space, providing an important revenue stream when income was otherwise limited. While remaining in compliance with dchd's numerous directed health measures (dhms), the convention center accumulated 73 event days that included 19 citywide event days and 29 other events including numerous smaller-format meetings and intimate in-person gatherings. Business in the convention center is notably returning to prepandemic levels, with bookings secured well into 2022, 2023 and beyond. Td ameritrade park omaha sat idle for much of the covid-19 pandemic due to the cancelation of 2020 ncaa spring sports, including division i baseball and its championship series. Meca and its stadium partners worked diligently through the year to assure the ballpark's ongoing maintenance, while also preparing contingency plans for multiple 2021 men's college world series (cws) attendance scenarios. Just weeks before the championship, the ncaa announced that 100% capacity would be permitted into td ameritrade park omaha welcoming fans back to meca's facilities. The 2021 cws ended with record-breaking attendance figures where mississippi state clinched their first title over returning champions vanderbilt. In the current fiscal year (2021-2022), charles schwab corp. Launched rebranding efforts of the ballfield after their 2020 acquisition of td ameritrade. Effective in 2022, the downtown ballpark will be known as charles schwab field omaha. In an attempt to mitigate the covid-19 pandemic's negative effects on meca's finances, authority management cut discretionary spending, renegotiated contracted services, and applied for alternative sources of financial assistance. As a last alternative, after six months of inactivity, meca was forced to furlough 35% of its full-time staff while awaiting additional federal aid. For remaining staff-members, additional duties were absorbed due to temporary downsizing, sanitation efforts were enhanced, preventative maintenance projects were completed and additional safety initiatives were implemented

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

Meca is a tax exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. In april 2006, meca received a favorable ruling from the internal revenue service (irs) in response to a private letter ruling request in july 2003. The ruling found that meca is lessening the burdens of the city of omaha by managing the operations of the facility. As a result of this finding, the irs determined that the revenues derived from the facility's operations are not subject to unrelated business income tax. Meca also operates in accordance with the findings of this ruling as it pertains to the operations of td ameritrade park omaha. Meca files form 990, return of organization exempt from income tax, in the u.s. Federal and state jurisdictions. As of june 30, 2021 and 2020, meca has no uncertain tax positions that qualify for disclosure in the financial statements. Management believes tax years subsequent to 2017 remain subject to examination by major tax jurisdictions.
