Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To recruit and place adult volunteers into inner-city public elementary schools to read one-to-one to children.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Read-Aloud Volunteer Program matches volunteers to read with K-2nd students weekly, either 1:1 (school year program) or in small groups (summer or outreach). Children in the programs also receive free books of their choosing. We operate in West Contra Costa County. This is a relationship based program designed to support young children's curiosity and joy in learning. A volunteer meets weekly with the same child(ren) to read with the child(ren) and listen to their questions and comments on the reading. Deep friendships are formed, and the child has the opportunity to discover the joys of reading and the love of books. Teachers select children to participate in the program, choosing those they think will most benefit from this individual attention, 1:1 reading, and exposure to books. Teachers; end of year evaluations demonstrate that children thrive in the program. Read-Aloud is based on the SMART Program in Oregon; an independent study by the Eugene Research Institute reveals that children who participated in SMART are more likely to reach state reading benchmarks than similar students who did not participate (5th graders). In the pandemic shortened 2019-20 academic year, Read-Aloud contributed approximately 2,430 reading and preparation hours to these children and provided more than 2600 books to build these children's home libraries; 650+ books were given to the schools for distribution to kids during the first months of school shut-down. Additionally, 140+ books were given and families in the supplemental summer program (online pilot, 15 weeks with 26 children) and 250+ books were given out in outreach.$33,000$85,357
