Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The 990 is reviewed by the Executive Director and then presented for approval by the Finance Committee and the Executive Board of the Foundation. Once approved at those levels, it is presented to the entire board.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Every director and key employee completes a conflict of interest disclosure form and they are reviewed in July by the Executive Committee.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

An annual review is conducted by the Human Resource Committee of the foundation. Performance is measured by industry standards in a consistent evaluation form. Annual goals are established with supervisor and evaluated annually as well. Self-assessment and supervisor assessment are completed separately. The parties come together and use a matrix to determine overall job performance. Bonuses are calculated based on a matrix of measurable results above goals and budget. Results are discussed with the executive committee and reported to the board at an executive meeting.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The governing documents and financial statements are available upon request.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Part V, Line 4

There is a 12-year plan in place and no disbursements will be made during this time. After 2025 the endowment committee will assess and determine if the foundation should start making disbursements. The endowment funds are intended to provide income to cover annual operating expenses such that every additional donation can directly support the foundation's mission.

IRS990/Desc0Removing Barriers supports academic success for those students furthest from racial and educational justice. Our Removing Barriers Pillar contains three programs: Backpacks for Kids, Basic Needs & Opportunity Funds, and McKinney Vento supplemental funding for the Northshore school district's homeless response. In 2023-2024 Removing Barriers supported a total of 1,130 families through all three programs with an additional 20 students whose school lunch debts were paid. We also helped the Northshore Family Engagement Center establish a summer meals program for food insecure families. Acting as the fiscal sponsor for a coalition of 10 local faith and community organizations and non-profits, we raised and distributed $10,000 worth of food to1,000 individual persons in over 300 families.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Enhance & Inspire Learning-in 2023-2024 we had a rebuilding year. We moved from a three grant/year cycle to a Fall/Spring grant cycle. This allowed us to better serve our schools by lengthening the application period. We also implemented new grant guidelines, which have helped to clarify what does and does not qualify. This resulted in a lower number of grant applications but also made for a smoother review process for our volunteer reviewers as well as fewer unfunded applications. We approved 64 grants during this fiscal year supporting 29/34 schools in the Northshore School District.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Build Skills for Life is our newest funding pillar and we are still defining the scope of what fits under building life skills for students in Pre-K-12th grades. During the 2023/24 school year we funded the Secondary Academy for Success's No Desks Allowed program for seniors as well as the SAS Rock Band. We also provided funding for the Keynote speaker for the Northshore Student Justice Conference. We will continue to identify programming whose support builds student skills they can use to success post High School graduation.
