Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 2

Jody allen and marjorie thomas have a business relationship.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The form 990 is reviewed on a detail basis by the director of finance and chief financial officer following which the ceo and finance committee conduct a review with the outside preparer. Finally, it is reviewed by all members of the board prior to approval to file.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Paid officers of the organization and all board members are required to sign and comply with the organization's conflict of interest policy. Annually, the officers and board complete a questionnaire that is reviewed by the director of finance. Any potential conflicts identified from the initial review are evaluated by the executive director and the president of the board. If a conflict of interest arises, the board members or officers will recuse themselves from voting on that particular matter or subject.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

An independent third-party organization was engaged to conduct a salary survey of comparable organizations. The results of this study are analyzed by members of the board of directors in order to approve a salary for the ceo. The organization's people + culture department obtained this information and performed a similar analysis also including comparative form 990 information and research of similar positions locally and nationally to determine compensation levels for key employees and officers. Detailed job descriptions defining duties, responsibilities, required skill level and experience also provide support for benchmarking and determining the market value for key positions. Department directors must approve all employment offers, the ceo must approve all management and key employee offers and the board must approve any executive officers. The last compensation review occurred in 2024.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements available upon request.

Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART I, LINE 6:

The number of volunteers is determined by running reports in volgistics, our volunteer database. Volunteer records and hours are tracked in volgistics throughout the year. Volunteers assisted with the guest experience and interpretation work, board of directors, public programs and education, and public relations/marketing throughout the year. There were over 6,800 hours served.

FORM 990, PART XI, LINE 9:

Loss on uncollectible pledges -4,525.

Financial Statement Notes

PART III, LINE 1A:

The organization's collections are made up of artifacts of historical significance and art objects that are held for educational, research, and curatorial purposes. Each of the items is cataloged, preserved, and cared for, and activities verifying their existence and assessing their condition are performed continuously. In keeping with standard museum practice, the organization's collections, acquired through purchase and contributions, are not recognized as assets on the consolidated statement of financial position. Purchases of collection items are recorded in the year in which the items were acquired as decreases in net assets without or with donor restrictions depending on the source of the assets used to purchase the items and whether those assets were restricted by donors. Contributed collection items are not reflected in the consolidated financial statements. Proceeds from de-accessions, which are reflected as increases in net assets with donor restrictions, are used exclusively to acquire new additions and direct care for items within the collection. The organization considers direct care expenditures investments that conserve or restore a collection item's cultural value, physical condition or long-term preservation.

PART III, LINE 4:

Mopop's collection includes more than 100,000 objects. The collection serves as a wellspring for inspiring ideas and themes, for programs and exhibitions. By displaying artifacts from the collection in exhibitions, the curatorial team is able to build narratives around key objects that draw the attention of visitors, while also using the collection to provide a larger historical context that deepens their appreciation and understanding of diverse areas of pop culture.

PART XI, LINE 2D - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Fundraising expenses 547,613.

PART XII, LINE 2D - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:
