Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The full form 990 is reviewed by the vp of finance & operations, chief operating officer & chief executive officer. The full form 990 is also provided to the board of directors prior to submission with the irs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

After each board member receives an orientation at the beginning of their term, informing them of the importance of disclosing and avoiding conflicts of interest and maintaining independence in their decision-making, they sign an attestation acknowledging that they understand the policy and that they agree to report any possible new conflicts as they arise. Annually, each board member fills out and signs a conflict of interest and independence questionnaire attesting to the existence of any business relationships, arrangements, and any transactions between them or related parties and cfc, its officers, directors, trustees, and key employees. If a conflict arises, the board determines the best course of action including but not limited to recusal from voting.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

Compensation for the chief executive officer and chief operating officer was determined using salary surveys and the form 990s of comparable non-profits. The compensation for the vice presidents and key employees was determined using annual salary surveys.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

Cfc's financial statements, form 990, governing documents, and conflict of interest policy are available to the public by request.

Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A:

1. Program development goal: develop and continuously improve culturally responsive and affirming programs that extend social-emotional learning into multiple settings. Our instructional designers worked with our research team to collect and analyze feedback from our advisory boards, culturally responsive teaching consultants, educators, students, and clients to determine which improvements would be the most impactful for students and the overall quality of our programs. 2. Program impact goal: to increase our program's impact by applying multiple strategies and in consultation with external experts along with our internal research team. We have used a continuous improvement model and an equity framework to evaluate ways to improve our programs so they are impactful for all children and have developed tools and supports to improve the implementation fidelity of our programs. 3. Partnership development goal: to build partnerships to expand cfc's reach and impact. We work closely with our school district partners to support the implementation of our programs through ongoing consultation and training. We also work closely with practitioners, experts, and researchers in the development of our programs. As part of our international outreach, partners in 12 countries promote and distribute adapted versions of the second step program and provide training and implementation support. We also manage the largest online community in the sel space on facebook with over 10,000 members from around the world. We work with casel, the leadership conference on civil and human rights, and numerous other associations and organizations working to advance social-emotional learning, bullying prevention, and child abuse prevention in k-12 education.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4B:

1. Training and implementation support goal: to provide high-quality, efficient, and accessible training and supports to ensure the successful implementation of our programs. Training resources are included with the purchase of our programs. Our client relations teams offer a wide range of training and implementation supports with a focus on continuous improvement, including implementation consultation for planning, onboarding, technical assistance, program usage, and sustainability. Our client relations teams also provide customized live workshops, proactive usage and implementation supports, and implementation webinars. Regional education partnerships teams provide district kick-off events in each territory to support strong program startups. 2. Implementation research goal: to determine how to improve the implementation fidelity of our programs and to measure the effectiveness of implementation resources. We have conducted research on how we can better support the implementation of our programs. We have developed an implementation adherence dashboard that enables us to understand the implementation fidelity of our digital programs, specifically in terms of adherence, engagement, and generalizability. 3. Program evaluation goal: to evaluate the effectiveness of our programs. We designed and began to implement an evaluation strategy and equity framework to support continuous improvement, allowing us to make incremental changes to our programs to ensure they are representative of and impactful for diverse communities. To meet this goal, we have developed research and evaluation roadmaps that align with research questions that can help us determine the impact of our programs.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4C:

1. Media outreach goal: to increase community awareness of social-emotional learning, child sexual abuse prevention, and bullying prevention through media outreach, policy and advocacy, and public relations campaigns. Cfc debuted its fifth annual hot chocolate talk campaign for child abuse prevention month in april 2022. The campaign included a free resources webpage that garnered 21,685 downloads of the organization's research-based conversation guides for different developmental age ranges. The campaign also included a spokesperson partnership with cfc's vice president of education, research, and impact, tia kim, ph.d., who was featured in cfc's satellite media tour. The satellite media tour achieved 27 broadcast media interviews with an estimated audience reach of 19.4 million. Cfc's bullying prevention efforts included the fifth annual captain compassion bullying prevention campaign. In honor of national bullying prevention month in october, cfc launched an updated webpage with a brand new webcomic addressing racially-motivated bullying that achieved 31,900 comic downloads during october 2022, a 308% increase from the previous year. The campaign included a satellite media tour featuring tia kim, ph.d., as the spokesperson and produced 25 interviews with broadcast media outlets across the country.
