“Preserving an american art form harmony college northwest -- this is an entire weekend of education in barbershop style singing. The weekend has been certified as acceptible continuing education for washington music teachers. The classes include vocal training and coaching for singers, training of coaches, directors, and arranging music in the barbershop style and those who design performances. Attendance is approximately 400 students. Those individuals return to their individual chapters and schools carrying the things they learned and passing the information on to others, so that the artform can be preserved and shared with public audiences. Performance funding -- provide financial support for musical groups carrying the barbershop musical style to other parts of the country and the world. This enables these groups to compete at higher levels. They return to evergreen district and disseminate what they learned through performing and coaching. Director coaching and education -- educating chorus directors. Provide training in how to teach music and other facets of barbershop harmony and directing. Our chorus director development officer works to provide classes at multiple levels, from assisting beginning directors to master classes for the experienced directors. Officer travel--sending district officers to local chapters to provide both musical and administrative training, counseling, and other assistance as needed.this includes sending officers to support each chapter which sponsors a convention during the year. Providing support for chapters in remote areas is critical. Membership--chapter connections and advocates are like officer travel in that we reach out to chapters to support them and make sure that they are aware of, and taking advantage of coaching, rla's, cdwi's, hcnw, harmony university, the bud leabo fund and sharing best practices. Liaison to the district board and nashville. If a chapter has issues and doesn't know where to get a hold of the proper resources or where to get their questions answered, we help them. Write articles for the timbre. I offer up ideas as to how chapters can reach out into their communities through charitable work and/or donations, as well as possible scholarships to local music students. Suggested that chapters have local youth musical groups on their shows in order to expose them to our style of a cappella singing and to offer variety to our barbershop audiences. These local groups get greater exposure as well as usually directly get some funding for their music program for performing on the show(s). Encourage chapters to make use of learning tracks to accelerate and refine their music learning process as well as making their directors time more efficiently used. Regional leadership academies--weekend classes to educate local chapter officers in understanding their responsibilities as well as maximizing the opportunities to teach barbershop style music and barbershop quartetting. Multiple classes are held to minimize the amount of travel to attend an academy. Contest & judging --pay for educating current judges maintaining their skills in interpreting the music, sound and stage presence demonstrating the barbershop a capella style. Certified judges provide training sessions at conventions to both choruses and quartets. Encourage members to join the judging community and become certified. Our contest and judging officer travels to each convention to assure all rules are followed. Standing ovation--provide review of show and performances. The reviewer will comment on quality of performance and maintaining the educational purpose of the barbershop harmony society. This information assists the local chapter in designing their show to enhance the education being provided to the audience about our musical style, its heritage and our desire to preserve this unique american art form. “The bud leabo memorial fund the bud leabo memorial fund (blmf) was established as a working memorial to the precepts and philosophy of bud leabo. He firmly believed in the value of music education and the impact of barbershop on all aspects of life. His belief was that more fun and satisfaction are possible by means of a heightened barbershop experience. Because it is an endowment fund, disbursements are made from the interest earned on the fund. Twice a year reports as to the status of the fund and disbursements are made to the evergreen district board of directors and the evergreen district house of delegates. The blmf was formed with the "culture of giving" in mind. We are here with the express mission to foster such a culture. Those who want to participate can do so in two ways. First, we are looking for projects that share the joy of barbershop with new people. We are looking for people with vision that are willing to lead a project with sharing in mind. Many startup projects never get off the ground, for lack of funding. That should not be the case anymore; we are here to provide that funding. Second, we are looking for financial partners to help accumulate funds that can support these innovative ideas. If you don't have time to contribute to a project, you can be a part of the culture by providing a means to make others' ideas grow.”
