“One in five households in california is food insecure. At the same time, los angeles is the crossroads through which much of the nation's produce passes, as home to one of north america's largest wholesale produce markets, one of the nation's busiest international ports, and weekly farmers markets across the region. But the reality is that much of this perfectly good produce is left to become waste in landfills; an astounding 38% of the food produced in the u.s. Is unsold or uneaten. Food forward's large-scale produce recovery and distribution operation is an important solution that moves surplus fruits and vegetables quickly and efficiently to people experiencing food insecurity. In 2024, food forward recovered and distributed more than 94 million pounds of produce-equivalent to 532 million servings-to hundreds of partner organizations that serve people experiencing food insecurity. This reflects an estimated social impact value of $185 million for the value of produce distributed, an impressive return on investment for food forward's lean operating costs. Food forward distributed produce across the region, including to 13 california counties (contra costa, fresno, kern, los angeles, monterey, orange, riverside, san bernardino, san diego, santa barbara, solano, tulare, ventura) and six additional states and tribal lands. Along with the benefits of improving access to healthier food, keeping this produce from going to landfills also prevented the emissions of more than 83,000 metric tons of co2-equivalent. Food forward currently distributes enough surplus fruits and vegetables each day to meet the daily recommended servings for more than 310,000 people.”
