Profile
The new media advocacy project (n-map) advances human rights and social justice by using digital video and other media to strengthen legal advocacy in courts, legislatures, and communities. N-map's lawyers and media professionals help advocates integrate new technology directly into their legal strategies, enabling them to win their cases and achieve their clients' goals more effectively and efficiently. N-map assists public interest advocates, other not-for profit organizations, underserved communities, and indigent individuals (typically victims of human rights abuses) with developing and integrating media into their social advocacy and public interest work on a pro bono or very low-cost basis.

The new media advocacy project (nmap) partners with civil society and human rights organizations to create strategic, multimedia campaigns that effectively promote human and environmental rights and advance justice. Nmap's filmmakers and media professionals help human rights advocates integrate visual media and new technologies directly into their advocacy strategies, enabling them to win their cases and achieve their advocacy goals more effectively and efficiently. Nmap assists human rights advocates and lawyers, other not-for-profit organizations, underserved communities, and victims of human rights abuses by co-developing and integrating multimedia into their public and private advocacy efforts.
In 2022 nmap partnered with foundations and civil society organizations to make measurable progress on complex problems where new narratives, reframing, and unconventional approaches are most needed. We continued to fight extractive industry abuse by using video to empower rural communities targeted for mining to defend their rights; continued a mentorship program for lgptqi and bipoc activists using narrative strategies to resist petrochemical development and imagine a different future for appalachia, and launched a mentorship program in ethiopia.

“The organization's form 990 is prepared by its independent accountants, and is reviewed by management and by the organization's audit committee. The form 990 is then provided to the board of directors prior to filing with the irs.”
“All board members and officers are provided with a copy of the conflict of interest policy and are required to complete and sign an acknowledgment and disclosure form. All completed forms are provided to and reviewed by the executive director and the chairperson. Any potential conflict of interest, which could result in a direct or indirect financial or personal benefit to a director, officer, or staff member, is disclosed in good faith to the board of directors. The interested individual can participate in the information-gathering stage of the board of directors discussion but cannot participate in the final deliberation or decision regarding such contract or other transaction. The interested individual may not vote on such contract or other transaction. The minutes of the meeting of the board of directors or committee reflects: (a) that the conflict of interest was disclosed; (b) that the interested director, officer or staff member was not present during the final discussion or vote of the board of directors or committee; and (c) that the interested individual abstained from voting. All questions as to whether a conflict of interest exists is resolved by a vote of the board of directors in which the interested individual may not vote.”
“Nmap conducts a compensation determination process for the position of executive director each year. The process was last completed in q4 2022. The compensation committee, composed of the board co-chairs, meets privately to discuss salary changes for the executive director as part of the executive director's annual performance review process. We use an established salary tier structure to guide the discussion about compensation. The tier system is based on non- profit salary surveys published annually by the non-profit coordinating committee for nyc area and includes a range of compensation for each position based on a variety of qualifications and factors. At the subsequent meeting of the board of directors, an executive session is held where the compensation committee proposes the salary changes and the board discusses and then votes to approve the changes. The board's decision is documented in the board meeting minutes for that quarter. Cost of living adjustments may be made organization-wide at the start of each year, these are based on cola, determined by the operations director and executive director, and effective on the first of the year.”
“The organization makes its form 990, governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements available to the public upon request. Additionally, the form 990 can be found on guidestar.org and similar websites.”
“The organization contracted with a professional employer organization (peo) for services, including but not limited to, payroll, timekeeping, employee benefits, hr administration and workforce regulatory compliance needs. As the employer of record for tax purposes, forms w-2 and w-3 are issued by the peo and filed under the peo's federal ein. In this co-employment arrangement, the organization is the common law employer and, accordingly, compensation is reported on form 990, part vii, section a and part ix, lines 5-10.”

THE MOU OUTLINES THE PROJECT AND FINANCIAL COMMITMENTS AND REQUIREMENTS FOR BOTH ORGANIZATIONS. OUR INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS ARE REQUIRED TO SUBMIT PROJECT BUDGETS AS PART OF THE MOU PROCESS AND ALSO BEFORE ANY TRANSFER OF FUNDS. WE TRACK THAT THOSE FUNDS ARE BEING SPENT AS WE MOVE THROUGHOUT THE PROGRAM YEAR THROUGH A SHARED BUDGET. FOR SOME PROJECTS, NMAP STAFF ALSO TRAVEL TO MEET WITH PARTNERS AND SEE THE FUNDS ARE SPENT FOR LOCAL STAFF, TRANSPORTATION, MEETINGS FEES ETC. DEPENDING ON THE PROJECT, NARRATIVE AND FINANCIAL REPORTS MAY BE DUE TO NMAP BASED ON MILESTONES OUTLINED IN THE MOU. |
