“The Kaiserslautern Kingfish Swim Team is organized from forward deployed active duty military service members that are stationed in the Kaiserslautern and Baumholder Military Communities, in Germany. The Swim Teams conducts its activities on the Ramstein Air Base under the supervision of the 86 Forward Support Squadron. Our all volunteer, all military dependent/family, board did not understand the requirements for filing for 990-EZ annually and did not understand the requirement to apply for tax exempt status within 27 months of requesting its EIN. Since AUG 2022, the swim teAm has operated in good faith. Each year, the board membership changes because families received military orders for a permanent change of station. This high turnover and inexperience led to the delay in filing FY22 and Fy23 form 990-EZs. This is FY 24 and is submitted on time (even if just barely). In April 2025, the new board requested the organizations exempt status paperwork only to learn the previous boards had not filed for exempt status. We spent 3 months searching for a CPA at our overseas location and were unsuccessful. We filed our request for exempt status on 17 JUL 25 with a request for retroactive status to AUG 2022 when our EIN was issued.
