Profile

Project Purpose was birthed to engage, encourage, and assist citizens across Washington DC with finding employment, healing from trauma, preventing violence, and providing recreation to residents. After 10+ years of active community engagement in Wards 7 and 8, a gap in workforce development was apparent. Project Purpose aims to bridge this gap and advance vital areas needed for citizens in our community. William, Charles, and Preston grew up in the Anacostia community of Washington DC. All 3 have diverse networks and direct insight on needs in the community. Project Purpose currently runs the following programs: Workforce development, Healing Through Poetry, Mentorship Workshops, Travel Program, Kids Krank Go-Go program, Lifeguard certification classes, and a Violence Intervention program.

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Trauma Response and Community Engagement Program (TRCEP) Funded by DC Governments Office of Victim Services. The TRCEP Program served over 400 residents in the Historic Anacostia Community in Washington DC. This program is designed to assist crime victims, and the families of crime victims during their healing journey. Treatment included healing groups, 1 on 1 counseling services, enrollment in local travel programs, access to poetry events, painting events, healing groups, music groups, and weekly morale boosting events. Additionally, we use this program to refer clients in low-income communities to resources outside of the community that they don't have access to. The TRCEP program is our largest program and is on going throughout the year. House of Music Education Program (HOME)- Started on the tail end of FY24. During its first events, youth in DC communities were offered free music classes that teach audio engineering and music production. The goal of this program is to provide safe spaces for teens during summer months when gun violence is highest. Additionally, it teaches the youth transferable skills that they can use in careers related to audio, and videography. This program also spawned a youth podcast group that addresses social issues in the community, allowing them to vocalize their trauma, their thoughts, and ideas on solutions. These episodes, and short films are often viewed by DC government agencies that fund our initiatives, which ultimately lead to additional programing opportunities for young people in DC. Over 50 teenagers and youth adults enrolled starting in July 2024 when the program was introduced. Lifeguard Certification Program- The lifeguard certification program was a 3-month program aimed at creating jobs for young adults in Washington DC. 8 people graduated from the course and now work for DCs Department of Recreation as lifeguards. Youth Boxing Program- In the summer of 2024, we ran a youth boxing program sponsored by Events DC that gave low-income residents access to free athletic training in boxing. This program was designed to increase fitness levels of participants, in an effort to help reducce the effects of trauma that many of participants face.$153,147$153,147

ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0We are a newer organization. I was not 100% sure as to when I should file our 990. One article I read said it was due in July. Upon further reading, I realized it was due within 2 weeks of the close of the FY. We are very late, it was a mistake.
