Each year the participants are challenged with completing a micro-production, from the developments stage, pre-production, production, post-production and distribution. | FILM PRODUCTION 36 participants, alongside 6 on-set union mentors were challenged with exhibiting the skills they learned in classes during preproduction to work in their new positions to complete filming for a 3day, short film project. The participants get paid to work in their new positions on the film project, marking the first time they have received payment for the new skills. Our model is a LEARN & EARN program. Participants who successfully meet the learning benchmarks are given the opportunity to work on the film and to get the union mentor to assist them in getting a union permit. The permit is our ultimate goal, as this allows the participant to continue the career journey toward union membership and a path to escape generational poverty. 50% of the participants in 2023 received their permits. The others 50% are continuing their education and mentorship with us this year, 2024 to also meet this goal. The union permits would not be an option without or organization providing this opportunity through connections in the industry and mentorship. | - | $19,746 |
| DEVELOPMENT AND PRE-PRODUCTION During this phase of programming, union mentors guide participants through hands-on learning for each of the skills needed to work professionally in specific departs in film and TV production. During 2023 we conducted classes and workshops for 36 diverse, underserved participants, offering them free education, hands-on learning, and mentorship in various departments: WRITING DIRECTING ASSISTAANT DIRECTORS LOCATION MANAGEMENT ' PRODUCTION OFFICE COORDINATION CAMERA DEPT. | PROGRAM: WRITING & DEVELOPMENT 5 rising, diverse writers learned skills related to the art of script writing and story telling. Technical and story instruction provided by volunteer writing professional mentors. LESSONS: 1. anatomy of a screenplay. 2. story outline 3. script writing software 4. completed short film script and revisions 5. character breakdowns 6. mood boards 7. exploration of other jobs within the writing arena of the industry with guest speakers. 1 of the 5 scripts from the above writers was chosen as the SMP Rise 2023, Fall short film project. This program would be too expensive for our participants via film school. This program also presents multiple options for writers to find work. Professional writers as guest speakers shared their experience and offered career advice and mentorship. Providing access for our participants to industry insiders. Without SMP Rise this would be nearly impossible. This program provided an opportunity for 4/5 writers to get paid for the first time for their writing skills. | - | $910 |
