“In 2024 City Sports Programs Inc. launched the SB Gunners a community-based travel soccer initiative designed to expand access to competitive youth sports for children in South Boston and surrounding neighborhoods. This program represents a significant evolution of our mission to provide inclusive developmentally appropriate and community-rooted athletic opportunities for children ages 5-12. The SB Gunners program was created in response to growing interest from families seeking a more structured and competitive soccer experience beyond our in-house recreational leagues. The initiative is aligned with our core values of accessibility equity and personal development through sport. It offers players the opportunity to participate in the Boston Area Youth Soccer BAYS League which includes local and regional competition within approximately 30 miles of South Boston. PROGRAM STRUCTURE: The SB Gunners operates on a two-season model: Fall Season -- September through November and Spring Season -- April through June. EACH SEASON INCLUDES: 10 league games typically held on Saturdays Playoffs at the end of each season Weekly team practices at Evans Field in South Boston Home games hosted at Moakley Field and Saunders Stadium and Away games played at peer clubs within the BAYS League. Teams are formed by age and grade cohorts with separate boys and girls teams for Grades 3 through 6. Tryouts are held prior to each season and players are selected based on skill level commitment and team needs. While tryouts are competitive the program remains committed to inclusivity and offers pathways for late additions and developmental opportunities. FINANCIAL ACCESSIBILITY: To ensure the program remains accessible to families of all income levels City Sports Programs Inc. offers scholarships and financial aid to qualifying participants. The estimated cost per season ranges from $190 to $240 which includes: League registration Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association fees Weekly practices and Coaching and administrative support. Uniform kits including game jerseys practice shirts shorts and socks are purchased separately and cost approximately $50-$80. Uniforms are designed to be reused across multiple seasons to reduce recurring costs. COMMUNITY IMPACT: The SB Gunners program strengthens community ties by Providing a positive and structured environment for youth to develop athletic and interpersonal skills Encouraging volunteerism with parents serving as coaches team managers and event coordinators Promoting healthy lifestyles through regular physical activity and Offering leadership and mentorship opportunities for older youth and adult volunteers. The program also complements our existing CityKids FC recreational leagues ensuring that children who prefer a less competitive environment still have access to high-quality soccer programming. This dual-track model allows us to serve a broader range of interests and abilities within our community. OVERSIGHT AND COMPLIANCE: SB Gunners is fully integrated into the operations of City Sports Programs Inc. a nonprofit and member of the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association. All coaches and volunteers undergo background checks and adhere to SafeSport guidelines. The organization follows best practices in youth sports safety including concussion protocols and emergency preparedness. FUTURE GOALS: As the SB Gunners program grows we aim to Expand the number of teams and age groups participating in BAYS Increase scholarship funding through grants and community partnerships Develop coaching certification pathways for volunteers and Host community events and tournaments to further engage families and local organizations.
