For the Executive Director the Boards Executive Committee comprised solely of independent board members-conducts the review. Any board member with a personal or financial interest recuses themselves from the discussion and vote. Final approval is made by the full board. Before making a decision the reviewing body examines reliable comparability data to ensure compensation is reasonable and aligned with similar organizations. This typically includes: Salary surveys from reputable nonprofit compensation databases Benchmarking against organizations of similar size budget and mission Regional cost of labor data Published compensation studies for nonprofit executives This data provides an objective basis for determining whether the proposed compensation package-salary bonuses and benefits-is appropriate.
