“Organization hosted five sports-related events, including experiences with bowling, swimming, softball and basketball.the club provided volunteer coaches and equipment at no charge for special olympics and unified sports, a division of special olympics. There were 38 members on three basketball teams, 46 bowlers and 42 softball players on three teams. Events have been held at several locations in iowa city and coralvile. Unified sports and special olympics teams have traveled as far as des moines. The club stepped in to provide suppot after the iowa city community school distrct and the iowa city recreation center dropped their support for the special olympics programs. Most participants are from johnson county, but a few come from linn and iowa counties.”

“The club has 187 members, most of them adults with intellectual disablities. At least one group event is held each month. Many have had 120 participants; all have had at least 40 attendees. The organization hosted eight social events,including a bingo party, costume-making party, game night party, potluck party and winter formal party. The club also sponsored informational presentations at the developmental disabilities conference in ames. The club also offered self-advocacy and voter education training. All leaders are voluntteers. About half of the board members are people with intellectual disablities. Everyone has a voice and contributes in some manner.”
