Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Cosmic writers uses creative writing education in order to boost the literacy, communication skills, and self-confidence of k-12 students. We run creative writing workshops in collaboration with schools, libraries, and community organizations.

Cosmic Writers provides high-quality, accessible creative writing education for underserved K-12 children. We seek to bridge socioeconomic gaps in accessing arts education: We partner with local schools & community organization to bring out-of-school time writing workshops into the spaces children already learn. Concurrently, our virtual writing camps are accessible to students nationally including in districts without local extracurricular opportunities. Our programs are uniquely effective in helping children improve core literacy skills & self-expression because we believe children learn best within a culture of joy and unconditional positive affirmation.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
July-August 2022: Cosmic Writers flagship creative writing program is Word Camp, a virtual writing camp open to children interested in self-expression or requiring literacy resources across the country. Word Camp 2023 featured 13 workshops serving children from grades 3-12 across a range of genres with enrollment open for 20 students per workshop (260 spots open total). Given optional/variable attendance virtually across the program, it is hard to estimate a concrete number of children who participated, but nearly all workshops were at max enrollment. Children participated in workshops on building protagonists for fiction, writing scripts for podcasts, and understanding the genre of afro-futurism. Students from 28 states were represented at Word Camp 2023. Word Camp was supported by part of the $50000 President's Engagement Prize of the University of Pennsylvania and $6150 from the Sachs Grant for Arts Innovation. (49 direct students impacted, 200 community members impacted including family impact)$7,869$7,869
September 2022: The Penn Program for Environmental Humanities arranged the Listen Up! Conference focused on climate change awareness. Cosmic Writers joined to provide climate writing education for high schoolers from all around Philadelphia with workshop topics ranging from Romantic Poetry to Conducting Journalistic Interviews. Cosmic Writers ran 10 workshops with enrollment for 10 students per workshop. Writing produced by students, many from underserved parts of Philadelphia, was featured and distributed in KidZine, a youth literacy magazine circulated by Cosmic Writers and Reading Recycled. (100 direct students impacted, 250 community members impacted including others in conference attendance and school administrators adapting curricular ideas)$2,989$600
August 2022: Cosmic Writers collaborated with FDR Park in South Philadelphia to run a nature-writing summer program focused on the ecological history and geography of the park. Students from neighborhoods all around Philadelphia were invited and participated in the program, which ran for five days. Children practiced vocabulary, form, and self-expression, each ending the program with a well-composed short story. The program culminated in a creative writing carnival community event and school supply giveaway. Hundreds of South Philly families arrived in FDR Park to participate in a celebration of literacy and access resources, and children enrolled in the nature-writing program presented their works to those present to encourage their progress. This program and the carnival were supported by a portion of the $50000 President's Engagement Prize from the University of Pennsylvania.
