|---|---|---|
| The program has been offered in multiple locations in the state of Colorado, enrolling more than 150 participants living with Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's and dementia. The program is also offered in the state of UT and IL, involving more than 50 other participants. Other locations are in the making in several other states and internationally. The core program of our organization is the NeuroPong Program, through which we are aiming at the following goals: 1. Improvement in motor function and disability status in people with Multiple Sclerosis. Both physical and mental disability need to be addressed in this population: a suitable, globally positive and energetic long term form of neuro rehabilitation is of paramount importance to recover from an acute attack, to prevent future episodes and to avoid a progression of the condition. Neuro rehabilitation after a Multiple Sclerosis flare-up is extremely important for the success (partial or total) of the functional recovery. Traditional physical therapy provides beneficial effects only if standardized and practiced regularly. However, lack of enjoyment for these sessions limits its rehabilitative potential. Table tennis, besides being a sport that engages and stimulates different parts of our brain at once with subsequent creation of new brain cells and new cerebral network, is also found to be quite entertaining and a result is an activity which is more easily maintained than other exercises which can at times seem laborious and unenjoyable. 2. Improvement of both motor and non-motor symptoms in people with Parkinson's Disease. Though medications and surgical treatment are individualized and adjusted to best suit each person with Parkinson's Disease, efficacy may be limited by side effects and inability to fully treat symptoms, especially balance deficits. In particular, postural instability significantly impacts quality of life in people with Parkinson's Disease and can result in falls that may lead to death. Since balance impairment and falls are negative contributors of quality of life in people with Parkinson's Disease, the marked improvement of muscle strength and resistance stimulated by playing table tennis will have a major positive effect. Furthermore, being a fast game of coordination, concentration and strategy, table tennis is associated with many other benefits: improves reflexes, hand-eye coordination, brain blood flow, balance, flexibility; develops mental acuity; promotes cardiovascular health, joint health, calories burning; is a form of stress relief; is an across generation fun sport. 3. Reduction of the speed of mental decline in people with Mild Cognitive Impairment and dementia. So far there are no pharmacological therapies for the prevention nor for the cure of dementia. The only two factors scientifically proven to slow down cognitive impairment are social engagement and physical activity. Table tennis serves both purposes for this condition. Classes are provided twice a week, with the duration of 2 hours. With the desire of bringing solid and scientific knowledge to support the benefits of table tennis as the #1 brain sport, we are engaging with local universities and institutions and with medical experts on healthy brain aging, cognitive decline and neurodegenerative conditions. We have presented the program to public and private organizations with the intent to increase the public awareness about neurodegenerative conditions and to work on abating the stigma and taboos too ofter associated with them. Even though we are dealing with degenerative conditions, what we are doing by offering this program is providing empowerment to each individual over their condition and teaching them by working to develop a new skill, one that has been proven to increase the potential of brain health. Last but not least, having positive interactive social engagement reduces depression, a crucial component for a person confronting these conditions. With our program we want to increase the participants' awareness of their physical capabilities through the benefits of table tennis. They learn daily how to better manage their condition and extend their quality of life through consciously improving their skill at the table. This will potentially enhance their self esteem in their day to day life. | $0 | $34,857 |
