Families in Action for Justice (FIA4J) was founded in 2021 to empower parents, youth, and educators to advocate for educational equity and civic engagement. Through leadership development, voter education, and grassroots organizing, FIA4J strengthens Black and Brown family voices in shaping public education policies and outcomes. Our mission is to increase civic power and ensure that families and students from historically underserved communities have the tools, knowledge, and influence to drive systemic change in education and governance.

Below are key highlights from 2023-24:1. 2024 Nonpartisan Candidate Forums & Civic EngagementFIA4J co hosted the largest nonpartisan candidate forums in Oakland, providing a platform for parents and students to engage directly with candidates for School Board and City Council in Districts 1, 3, 5, and 7, as well as the At-Large City Council position. Candidates answered questions about their education priorities, charter renewals, and their commitment to equitable access to quality education. 350+ attendees participated, making this one of the most impactful school board forums in Oakland. Candidates responded to lightning round questions on key education policies, giving families direct insights into their priorities. FIA4J also led a virtual candidate forum for the Alameda County Board of Education, further ensuring that education policy was a central issue in local elections.2. Voter Education & OutreachAhead of the 2024 elections, FIA4J launched a major civic power campaign to educate Oakland families on critical ballot measures, recalls, and local races. Key efforts included: Voter outreach through phone banking & canvassing: FIA4J organized six phone banking sessions and multiple literature drop events, reaching over 10,000 households with information about candidates and ballot measures impacting education. Targeted outreach on key issues: FIA4J provided detailed voter education on topics such as the recalls of Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price, and city ballot measures impacting public safety and ethics oversight.3. Research Action Meetings and EndorsementsResearch action meetings: FIA4J families met with local candidates to discuss their education platforms and community concerns, ensuring that elected officials prioritized education justice. Family leaders met to made recommendations on candidates to endorse for Mayor and school board. 4. Summer Literature Drops & Community EngagementAs part of FIA4J's 2024 Civic Power Campaign, the organization mobilized community-wide educational literature drops to inform families about upcoming elections and their impact on local education. Two major lit drop events (June 22 & July 20) reached 5,000+ addresses per district. FIA4J recruited and mobilized 60+ volunteers per event to increase voter awareness about education-related policies and school board decisions.FIA4J continues to strengthen civic power, increase family-led advocacy, and ensure educational equity remains a top priority in Oakland. Through candidate forums, voter education, community organizing, and policy advocacy, FIA4J has deepened its impact in shaping the future of public education in the city.

Through leadership development, voter education, and grassroots organizing, FIA4J strengthens Black and Brown family voices in shaping public education policies and outcomes. Our mission is to increase civic power and ensure that families and students from historically underserved communities have the tools, knowledge, and influence to drive systemic change in education and governance.
