Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

Mpc gives the audit firm the necessary information to prepare the 990. A draft of the 990 is reviewed by management, management reviews the 990 with the board executive committee and then with the full board of directors. The board of directors has final approval of the 990.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Board members are asked if there are any conflicts before voting on sensitive issues like a grant to an organization. If a conflict is discovered, that board member is excluded from voting on the issue.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

The executive director's salary is routinely reviewed by the finance committee. The salary review includes a review of recent salary surveys and comparisons to positions in similarly sized organizations in their geographic location. Recommendations of the finance committee are forwarded to the full board for approval.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

Governing documents are registered with the minnesota secretary of state's office, and are available to the public. Financial statements can be obtained through federal, minnesota state, or dun & bradstreet offices. Conflict of interest policy must be requested from mississippi park connection.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0PROVIDING PARK EXPERIENCES FOR EVERYONE IS ONE OF THE LEADING GOALS OF MISSISSIPPI PARK CONNECTION. TOGETHER WITH THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE AND MANY OTHER ORGANIZATIONS IN THE COMMUNITY, WE PROVIDE YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS AND EVENTS FOR ADULTS, FAMILIES, AND KIDS. VISITOR CENTERSMISSISSIPPI PARK CONNECTION IS PROUD TO WORK WITH MISSISSIPPI NATIONAL RIVER AND RECREATION AREA TO OPERATE VISITOR CENTERS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE RIVER. MISSISSIPPI PARK CONNCTION ALSO HELPS NPS RUN VISITOR OPERATIONS AT THE UPPER ST ANTHONY FALLS LOCK AND DAM FROM MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND-SEPTEMBER ANNUALLY. MPC FUNDS SEASONAL PARK RANGERS AND ITS OWN STAFF TO HELP BRING THE LOCK AND THE FALLS TO LIFE FOR NEARLY 20,000 VISITORS EACH YEAR. FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS, MISSISSIPPI PARK CONNECTION HAS PARTNERED WITH NPS, NORTHERN LIGHTS.MN AND LOCAL ARTISTS TO USE THE LOCK AS A CANVAS FOR ARTISTIC PROJECTION AND PERFORMANCE. "ILLUMINATE THE LOCK" DRAWS PEOPLE TO THE RIVER AND TO THE LOCK AND DAM IN FREE EVENING PERFORMACES ON THE LOCK WALL. THE 49-FOOT TALL CHAMBER OF UPPER SAINT ANTHONY FALLS LOCK AND DAM WILL COMES ALIVE WITH POETRY, PROJECTION AND MUSIC.MISSISSIPPI RIVER PADDLE SHARE A FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND IN A NATIONAL PARK PROGRAM, MISSISSIPPI RIVER PADDLE SHARE (PADDLESHARE.ORG)CONNECTS PEOPLE TO SELF-SERVE KAYAKING EXPERIENCES ON THE RIVER AND BACKWATERLAKES OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. FOR A SMALL FEE, A PERSON CAN USE A KAYAK ON THERIVER FOR UP TO 3 HOURS, PADDLING ONE WAY DOWN THE RIVER, AND THEN USE BIKE SHARETO RETURN TO THEIR POINT OF ORIGIN BY PEDDLING UPRIVER. THREE CITY GOVERNMENTS, THEMINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE, AND THEARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS HAVE COLLABORATED WITH MISSISSIPPI PARK CONNECTION TOMAKE THIS PROGRAM A REALITY ON THE GROUND. IN ADDITION, PHILANTHROPIC SUPPORTFROM REI, THE NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION FOUNDATION, AND MPC MEMBERSAND DONORS HAVE COMPLEMENTED FEDERAL FUNDING TO MAKE THIS PROGRAM COME TO LIFE.WITHOUT THE SUPPORT OF EACH PIECE OF THE PUZZLE, THE PROGRAM WOULD NOT HAVECOME TO FRUITION AND SERVED NEARLY 3,000 PEOPLE IN THE SUMMER OF 2018. RIVER CITY REVENUEORGANIZED BY MISSISSIPPI PARK CONNECTION AND THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE, RIVER CITY REVENUE IS AN ANNUAL SERIES OF SOCIAL EVENTS ON AND AROUND THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER IN OUR NATIONAL PARK. EACH RIVER CITY REVENUE PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS A DIFFERENT THEME, PRESENTING ECLECTIC PERSPECTIVES THAT FOCUS ATTENTION ON THE RIVER WE SHARE. FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS WE HAVE PARTNERED WITH FEARLESS COMEDY PRODUCTIONS TO CREATE AN ORIGINAL MURDER MYSTERY PLAY THAT IS ROOTED IN MISSISSIPPI RIVER HISTORY. "MURDER ON THE MISSISSIPPI" SERVES 450 / YEAR AND HAS BECOME A DON'T-MISS EVENT EVERY SUMMER.

AS THE PARK FACES THESE CHALLENGES, MISSISSIPPI PARK CONNECTION IS COMMITTED TO BUILDING RESILIENCE IN THE URBAN FOREST THROUGH NEW AND ONGOING ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP INITIATIVES.WE ARE BUILDING A STRONG AND RESILIENT URBAN FOREST FOR GENERATIONS TO COME. BY PLANTING A DIVERSE MIX OF NATIVE AND SOUTHERN-ADAPTED SPECIES, OUR PARK'S FORESTS WILL BETTER RESIST EMERGING PESTS AND DISEASE, AND WILL BECOME ADAPTED TO A CHANGING CLIMATE. OUR GOAL IS TO PLANT AND MAINTAIN 15,000 HEALTHY TREES OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS AND SUSTAIN A DEDICATED YOUTH / YOUNG ADULT CONSERVATION CREW TO WORK EXCLUSIVELY WITHIN THE NATIONAL PARK BOUNDARY. COLDWATER SPRING RESTORATIONCOLDWATER SPRING SITS BETWEEN MINNEHAHA FALLS REGIONAL PARK AND FORT SNELLING STATE PARK. PREVIOUSLY HOME TO THE BUREAU OF MINES TWIN CITIES RESEARCH CENTER, THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE ACQUIRED RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE PROPERTY IN 2010 AND HAS SINCE WORKED WITH MISSISSIPPI PARK CONNECTION TO RESTORE THE AREA TO AN OAK SAVANNA PRAIRIE LANDSCAPE. OVER THE YEARS, OUR ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP EFFORTS AT COLDWATER SPRING HAVE TRANSFORMED THE AREA FROM A FORMER.
