“Sundance Institute (the "Institute") is a Utah not-for-profit corporation organized in 1981, dedicated to the discovery and development of independent artists and audiences. Through its programs, the Institute seeks to discover, support and inspire independent film and media artists from the United States and around the world, and to introduce audiences to their work. The Institute presents its annual Sundance Film Festival and offers a range of artistic development programs that provide creative, financial, and strategic support for independent fiction and nonfiction filmmakers, screenwriters, documentary film makers and independent film producers. The Institute's labs and workshops offer an environment that encourages artists to take the creative risks that often lead to innovation. Leading film professionals serve as creative advisors and support participating artists in realizing their original stories. “Sundance Film Festival Program: The 2024 Sundance Film Festival presented 82 feature-length films representing 24 countries. The program was composed of 40 of 101 (40%) feature film directors who were first-time feature filmmakers, and 11 of the feature films and projects were supported by Sundance Institute in development through direct granting or residency labs. World premieres made up 85, or 94%, of the Festival's 90 feature films and episodic programs. These films were selected from 17,435 submissions from 153 countries or territories, including 4,410 feature-length films, 573 episodic projects, and 385 New Frontier submissions. Of the 82 feature films, 46% were directed by one or more filmmakers who identify as women; 5% were directed by one or more filmmakers who identify as nonbinary or gender-nonconforming; 45% were directed by one or more filmmakers who identify as people of color; 23% by one or more filmmakers who identify as LGBTQ+, 7% were directed by one or more filmmakers who identify as transgender; 6% identify as a person with a disability. Additionally, the Festival showcased 53 short films, 8 episodic projects, and a New Frontier interactive experience.”
