EIN 86-3924631 • 501(c)3 • Madison, WI

Profile

Health Poverty Action USA acts in solidarity with health workers, activists and communities worldwide to improve health and challenge the causes of poverty. We do this in 3 distinct ways: We approach health as an issue of social justice. We recognize that the greatest causes of poor health worldwide are political, social and economic injustices. That is why we tackle the root causes of poor health as well as the symptoms. We prioritize those missed out by others. Development organizations tend to cluster together which leaves large populations with almost no support at all. We make these most neglected populations our highest priority. We address the full range of factors which impact on health. As well as strengthening health services we work on areas such as nutrition, water, sanitation, immunisation, and income generation. Tackling one cause of poor health in isolation can give the appearance of improving health, but in reality might do little more than change the cause of death.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
In seven Maya Mam and Kiche districts of Guatemala, we worked with Indigenous communities to make health services for women and children more culturally appropriate and accessible. Using participatory approaches in conjunction with strategic partners, we supported over 1,100 pregnant women and new mothers through culturally grounded maternal health groups, demonstration gardens at 16 health posts, and training in gardening, cooking, and nutrition with locally available foodsall reporting improved diets. Newborn mortality fell from 93 to 51, and births attended by skilled health staff rose 14% from last year. We trained 357 government health staff and supported Traditional Birth Attendants to implement national policy, use misoprostol for safer home births, and address perinatal depression. Our recognized expertise led to invitations to deliver national training to strengthen culturally inclusive care.$25,000$22,500
In conflict-affected Kachin and Shan States, we worked with local partners to deliver life-saving care to over 245,000 people facing displacement and poverty. Mobile clinics provided medicines, nutrition for malnourished children and pregnant women, and emergency referralssupporting 8,281 skilled births, treating 8,432 children for diarrhea and 3,423 for pneumonia, screening 25,221 for malnutrition, and referring 1,016 for emergency care. Along the ChinaMyanmar border, we tested 208,000+ people for malaria, treated cases, and trained health workers to sustain care where formal services are absent. Even amid active conflict, we secured safe passage for clinics and piloted remote supervision to keep communities connected to vital health services.$20,071$16,600
We supported a project that worked with 2,615 women survivors of gender-based violence in the tea sector by providing opportunities for secure employment, improved working conditions, and gender transformation initiatives.$10,340$8,551
