“Program service accomplishments:next breath hosted a major two-day symposium for students on human origins and the future of humanity, celebrating the 50-year discovery of lucy, the earliest australopithecine by professor donald johanson. Program highlights included recent developments in the understanding of our genetic heritage, evaluating how mankind has evolved, and what new scientific discoveries and technologies will mean for human life going forward. The program considered new scientific understandings and discoveries that may offer abilities to extend life and human capabilities. Attendees were invited to consider our place as a species, in terms of time, our role in nature with the many challenges and opportunities before us-such as ecological instability, species extinction, and procurement and allocation of dwindling resources. Keynote speakers were invited, including an opening address by professor donald johanson. Symposium talks were recorded and made public on our website and youtube.com additionally, next breath partnered with the missouri history museum for an initiative to create a time capsule displaying all symposium participants' comments, questions, and concerns about what the future of humanity might look like based on the material from the symposium, on human origins and the future of humanity. The reflections have been placed in the time capsule to travel to future next breath symposiums and will eventually be housed at the missouri history museum itself.”
