| PRIORITY 1: Building Four Corners Risings Organizational Capacity and Becoming a Trusted ResourceIn January 2023, our board members came together to build a new Navajo-based, Navajo-led organization rooted in our cultural values. Our vision ensures that future generations of Din communities are healthy, enduring and thriving. We are committed to honoring the life and dignity of our Din ancestors who sacrificed to maintain Dintah as a place for us to grow and prosper. We strive to emulate our Din ancestors, who were industrious in how they lived and cared for the land, animals, water and each other.Because water is life, our initial focus is on ensuring that Navajo communities, our people, and all our relatives have access to the water that our ancestors sacrificed and fought for.Since April 2023, we have had staff in communities working to build a cohort of leaders in an approach that embodies Ke (kinship) principles. These principles encourage intergenerational exclusivity, strengthen community capacity, build the well-being of our communities, and ensure that Navajo cultural values are an integral part of building prosperity within our communities. Our partnerships and process demonstrate our commitment to community-led initiatives that support Navajo cultural values while securing access to Navajo Nations rightful water resources. The Board continues developing the organizational infrastructure needed to support administration and fundraising.PRIORITY 2. Strengthening Community Problem-Solving Capacity Strategic Focus: Navajo-Gallup Water Supply ProjectFour Corners Risings initial strategic focus is on establishing community and economic development plans around the Navajo-Gallup Water Supply Project(NGWSP), particularly the San Juan Lateral and the Beacon-Bisti Navajo Route 9 Laterals running east to Crownpoint and surrounding communities. While the NGWSP is currently being built across Eastern Navajo, federal project partners focus primarily on the major waterline (laterals) and pumpsnot on the smaller community waterline projects that are necessary to bring the water to homes and businesses. Four Corners Rising supports Navajo Chapters (the Navajo Nations most local level of government) in planning their use of NGWSP water to help communities thrive.Year One (2023): Building Trust and Understanding In our First year of operation, we focused on:- Introducing our organization to chapters- Listening to chapters to learn about their capacity and interest partnering with Four Corners Rising- Completing a community planning needs assessment- Building trusted relationships with many New Mexico Chapters- Establishing Four Corners Rising as a trusted public resource with Navajo Nation and State of New Mexico governmental entitiesCommunities identified key community development priorities, such as new home sites, water line extensions to homes and businesses to end the need for hauling water, sewer lagoon expansions, solar power development and power line extensions, and community facilities. They also identified economic development needs, such as entrepreneurship training, business site lease planning, and education on Navajo Nation tax law.Year Two (2024): Delivering Technical AssistanceFour Corners Rising Director Jonathan Perry provided specific technical assistance requested by chapters in 2024. Over the course of the year, Director Perry participated in more than 170 meetings with government officials in Eastern Navajo, including traveling to 20 of 35 chapters served by the San Juan and the Beacon-Bisti Navajo Route 9 Laterals of the NGWSP.Through these meetings, he provided information about the topics Chapters told us they wanted guidance and training about:- Navajo and New Mexico State funding systems, especially related to the NGWSP;- Navajo Nation Community Land Use Planning process;- Navajo Nation Land Designation and Land Withdrawal process;- Navajo Nation and New Mexico State Infrastructure Capital Improvement Plan(ICIP) process;- New Mexicos Tribal Infrastructure Fund (TIF) application process;- Project management best practices; and- Making local ownership of all planning initiatives a priority within communities.By the end of 2024, we established a working cohort of Navajo Chapter house communities along the San Juan and the Beacon-Bisti Navajo Route 9 Laterals. This cohort is coming together to increase the collective problem-solving capacity and project implementation knowledge. These chapters are now poised to serve as peer mentors for the other chapters and model a regional collaborative approach to planning and water development and use.Looking Ahead to 2025Through our workgrounded in Din cultural values and principles of K'we are establishing ourselves as trusted, long-term community resource and effective partner. We are building interconnectedness and solidarity among Chapters and their communities, providing momentum to keep local plans moving forward and ensuring future generations of Din communities are healthy, enduring, and thriving. | - | $107,537 |
