Mission

The mission of the Lost Souls Public Memorial Project is to uncover relevant history raise community awareness and build a public memorial through centering the experiences of those who have become known as the Lost Souls stolen in 1818 by a slave ring led by a corrupt Middlesex County judge We commit to involving perspectives of Black individuals and groups in our process and project while engaging the whole of our diverse communities We see our work as an ongoing and collective act of liberatory memory that contributes to greater justice amends and healing in our local communities state and country

The Lost Souls Public Memorial Project LSP of New Jersey endeavors to pay tribute to the lives of Black women children and men who were unlawfully sold during the domestic slave trade. Our mission has three main objectives: 1. research connecting the Lost Souls with their New Jersey communities while tracing their lives in the Deep South. 2. Through public events and teacher training the project aims to raise awareness about New Jerseys role in the domestic slave trade and history of slavery in the state and 3. to create a dedicated living memorial

Research - The Lost Souls Public Memorial Project has funded ongoing historical research across various New Jersey counties to identify and connect the Lost Souls to their New Jersey communities.Tracing the Lost Souls through the largest slave port in the United States New Orleans Louisiana LSP fostered a partnership with Louisiana State Universitys History department,demonstrating our continued commitment to exploring the communities the Lost Souls created and sustained in the Deep South. This research is resident on our website and viewable by anyone who accesses the website. For 2023 our website averaged 1,084 unique visits per month. Additonally the fruits of the research is shared during our public events as described below in the edcuation description.$5,320$5,640
Education -Lost Souls has engaged audiences through public talks webinars youth walk and learn events and genealogical workshops. The annual Recitation of Names which combines history and art has also been a popular public celebration of remembrance and resilience. As an extension of the education curriculum LSPMP leveraged Emmy-nominated documentary "The Price of Silence: The Forgotten Stories of New Jersey's Enslaved People" as an entry point for discussion about New Jersey slavery and education. Being featured in the film Lost Souls Project co-sponsored screenings and participated in panel discussions in Mercer Morris Somerset Middlesex and Monmouth counties. As a result LSPMP has received numerous requests statewide to educate diverse audiences including the Essex County's West Orange African Heritage Organization State Department of Justice State of New Jersey Public Library and the Division of History and Historic Preservation Arts Institute of Middlesex County. In addition Lost Souls Project collaborated with William Paterson University's School of Education conducting seminars for K -12 teachers in Passaic County. These seminars helped teachers incorporate the organization's educational initiatives into their classrooms. Three of our Board officers are African American women.$0$3,680
