Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The williamston theatre is a professional regional theatre that offers a diverse array of intimate storytelling experiences to entertain, build a sense of belonging, and foster empathy for the human journey. This mission is guided by four core values: excellence, inclusion, creating a sense of place, and sustainability. This mission statement is supported by the following objectives: to be an integral part of the cultural fabric of michigan: to pursue innovative collaboration in every aspect of our work: to establish a home for midwest artists: to engage audiences of diverse ages, cultures and economic backgrounds.

Though the williamston theatre(wt) did not mount a "normal" 2020-2021 season, the organization engaged in activities to maintain the public profile of the theatre, strengthened organizational capacity, and protected limited reserves to enable a reopening once the threat of covid passed. At the onset of the pandemic shutdown, the wt team drafted several plans for the 2020-2021 season, pending the evolution of the virus. Once in-person performance was deemed unsafe, the wt team pivoted to audio projects to maintain our commitment to storytelling in some format and continue to serve the community. Four audio projects, two free and two on a pay-what- you-wish basis, were developed and continue to be offered to the public on the theatre's website. Several free zoom play readings were also offered. With the support of a community foundation grant, the staff and board engaged in a year-long stategic planning process with a nonprofit consultant, resulting in clarified values, goals, and a 3-ye

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 11B

The form 990 was prepared by the organization's treasurer(the signer of the return), a cpa licensed in the state of michigan and experienced in the preparation of returns for 501(c)3 organizations. The starting point for the return preparation was the audited financial statements. Additional detail required for the return was obtained from the audited books and records. The return was prepared on professional software with a robust diagnostic system that catches unanswered questions, incomplete information, missing supporting forms or conflicting data between sections of the form 990. A draft copy of the return was read by the executive director. The members of the board of directors received a copy of the form 990 prior to being finalized and then approved for filing. The role of the paid preparer is to transcribe the finalized return(subject only to their software diagnostics) for electronic submission to the irs.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 12C

Annually, each director, officer and key employee signs a written statement attesting to any conflicts that may exist. In most cases, a simple recusal suffices in clearing the conflict. Should a serious conflict exist, the board of directors would address the issue.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 15B

The board of directors has an executive committee that reviews the performance of the executive director. Compensation of the executive director is well below industry standards. Written record of executive committee meetings are maintained.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2THE FORM 990 WAS PREPARED BY THE ORGANIZATION'S TREASURER(THE SIGNER OF THE RETURN), A CPA LICENSED IN THE STATE OF MICHIGAN AND EXPERIENCED IN THE PREPARATION OF RETURNS FOR 501(C)3 ORGANIZATIONS.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3ANNUALLY, EACH DIRECTOR, OFFICER AND KEY EMPLOYEE SIGNS A WRITTEN STATEMENT ATTESTING TO ANY CONFLICTS THAT MAY EXIST. IN MOST CASES, A SIMPLE RECUSAL SUFFICES IN CLEARING THE CONFLICT. SHOULD A SERIOUS CONFLICT EXIST, THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS WOULD ADDRESS THE ISSUE.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS HAS AN EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE THAT REVIEWS THE PERFORMANCE OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR. COMPENSATION OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR IS WELL BELOW INDUSTRY STANDARDS. WRITTEN RECORD OF EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETINGS ARE MAINTAINED.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt5ALL DOCUMENTS REQUIRED TO BE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC ARE AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST(IN PERSON OR BY PHONE) OF THE INDIVIDUAL LISTED ON LINE 20 OF THIS SECTION.
