Desert senita community health center is the sole provider of primary medical, dental, physical therapy, and behavioral healthcare as well as pharmacy services in the rural frontier community of ajo, arizona, a geographically isolated area roughly 2.5 times the size of the state of connecticut and surrounded on all sides by federal lands. Ajo and surrounding areas have a u.s. Census 2022 population of approximately 4,000. Desert senita community health center currently provides services to an estimated 75% of all local residents and typically records over 12,000 patient visits per year. In 2017, desert senita community health center (dschc) expanded services to include primary care medical, behavioral health, and pharmacy services to the unincorporated community of arizona city, in pinal county, arizona. Dschc is the only fulltime provider of primary healthcare and pharmacy services in the community. Services have increased substantially post- pandemic, providing improved local access to care for a highly diverse community demographic of approximately 9,000 residents. The desert senita organization has evolved from a hospital and outpatient facility in ajo, arizona, operated by phelps dodge mining and its subsidiaries from the early 20th century until operations ended in 1986. Following the closure of the mine, hospital operations were terminated and transitioned into outpatient treatment services in a facility that was relocated to the mine's former single men's dormitory. The then ajo community health center was managed in transition by the former hospital management team through the late 1990s, and in 1997 the health center was incorporated as ajo community health center dba desert senita community health center. The facility was deemed a federally qualified health center (fqhc) in 2001. Pharmacy and dental services were both substantially expanded with the construction of new facilities in 2008 and 2009 as a result of federal and private grant funding. Services provided include all those common to fqhcs, and all services are provided to every age group and community member (including primary medical care services, dental services, behavioral health services, physical therapy services, preventive care services, and outreach/educational services) without regard to the ability to pay for said services through the application of an income based sliding fee scale.”
