IRS990/Desc0GARDENS & FACILITIESDURING FISCAL YEAR 2024, THE GARDENS DEPARTMENT WORKED TOWARDS ACHIEVING THE CORE VALUES OF STEWARDSHIP, BELONGING, AND INTEGRITY, THAT DEFINE TOHONO CHUL. WE DID THIS THROUGH WATER CONSERVATION PROJECTS, THE CREATION OF A LIVING COLLECTIONS CHARTER, AND SUBSTANTIAL IMPROVEMENTS TO PHYSICAL GARDEN SPACES.A CRITICAL ASPECT OF STEWARDSHIP FOR ANY GARDEN IN AN ARID ENVIRONMENT IS THE RESPONSIBLE USE OF WATER. IN 2024 THE GARDENS DEPARTMENT FULLY IMPLEMENTED PHASE ONE OF TOHONO CHUL'S THREE-PART WATER CONSERVATION PLAN. PHASE ONE INVOLVED THE INSTALLATION OF THREE NEW IRRIGATION CLOCKS, ALONG WITH ENHANCEMENTS AND REPAIRS TO IRRIGATION INFRASTRUCTURE. THE NEW CLOCKS ARE WIFI ENABLED, ALLOWING US TO BETTER CONTROL IRRIGATION TO RESPOND TO CHANGING TEMPERATURES AND WEATHER CONDITIONS, ENSURING THAT OUR WATERING IS APPROPRIATE TO SEASONAL SHIFTS AND ALLOWING US TO SHUT OFF WATER FOLLOWING RAIN EVENTS. EXPANSION AND REPAIR OF EXISTING IRRIGATION INFRASTRUCTURE HAS ALLOWED US TO REPLACE WATER-INTENSIVE SPRAYERS, WITH WATER-CONSERVING DRIP IRRIGATION, AND TO OBVIATE THE NEED FOR HAND WATERING OR MANUAL OPERATION OF IRRIGATION VALVES, SAVING THOUSANDS OF GALLONS OF WATER THIS YEAR. ASIDE FROM DIRECT BENEFITS TO THE ORGANIZATION, THESE EFFORTS MAKE US A LEADER IN RESPONSIBLE GARDENING PRACTICES, ALLOWING US TO SERVE AS A MODEL FOR OUR COMMUNITY, AND AN EXAMPLE FOR OTHER GARDENERS AND INSTITUTIONS TO FOLLOW. FURTHERMORE, TOHONO CHUL IS SUBSTANTIALLY COMPLETE ON THE GARDEN'S FIRST EVER OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE PLAN WHICH WILL SET STANDARDS OF CARE FOR OUR GARDENS, PROVIDE DETAILED HORTICULTURAL TASKS AND SCHEDULES, DEFINE ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES, AND IDENTIFY RESOURCES OR KNOWLEDGE AREAS NEEDED FOR ONGOING CARE.CENTRAL TO THE CORE VALUE OF BELONGING IS A STRONG SENSE OF PLACE THAT CONNECTS OUR VISITORS TO THE WIDER ECOLOGICAL NETWORKS OF THE SONORAN DESERT. FOR THIS REASON, THE GARDENS DEPARTMENT WORKED WITH A DIVERSE COMMITTEE OF INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL PARTNERS TO DEVELOP A LIVING COLLECTIONS CHARTER THAT SERVES AS A LENS THROUGH WHICH TO INTERPRET OUR LIVING COLLECTIONS AND ENSURE THAT THEY REPRESENT THE BOTANICAL DIVERSITY OF THE SONORAN DESERT REGION. THIS INITIATIVE WENT HAND IN HAND WITH THE COMPLETION OF A MULTI-YEAR EFFORT TO CATALOG, MAP, AND ASSESS ALL OF THE SPECIES REPRESENTED IN OUR GARDENS. THIS DATA HELPS US ANALYZE THE PLANTS IN OUR COLLECTION SO THAT WE CAN UNDERSTAND HOW WELL WE ARE REPRESENTING SONORAN DESERT SPECIES, AND WHAT PLANTS WE HAVE ON GROUNDS THAT REQUIRE SPECIAL CONSIDERATION AND PROTECTION BECAUSE OF THE DEGREE TO WHICH THEY ARE THREATENED IN THEIR NATURAL HABITATS. USING OUR LIVING COLLECTIONS CHARTER, AND OUR NEWFOUND UNDERSTANDING OF THE PLANTS IN OUR GARDENS WE CAN FORM HOLISTIC GARDEN DESIGNS AND MAINTENANCE PLANS THAT PLACE US AT THE FOREFRONT OF INSTITUTIONS INTERPRETING AND DISPLAYING THE ECOLOGICAL BOUNTY OF THE SONORAN DESERT.INTEGRITY, IN THE CONTEXT OF OUR GARDENS, MEANS MAKING APPROPRIATE PLANT SELECTIONS AND MAINTAINING OUR GARDENS TO THE HIGHEST STANDARD OF CARE POSSIBLE. IN 2024 WE COMPLETED MAJOR OVERHAULS OF FOUR OF OUR CORE GARDENS ALONG WITH MINOR ENHANCEMENTS IN NEARLY EVERY GARDEN ON-SITE. THE GARDENS TEAM WORKED TO COMPILE TREE HEALTH ASSESSMENTS FOR EVERY ONE OF THE 1,022 TREES IN OUR CORE GARDENS AND TO REMOVE DYING OR DAMAGED TREES THAT REPRESENTED A HAZARD TO VISITORS AND STAFF. REMOVAL OF NON-NATIVE TAXA AND REPLACEMENT WITH NATIVE SPECIES REDUCED WATER NEEDS IN THE GARDENS AND HAS CREATED A HABITAT FOR THE MYRIAD INSECTS, BIRDS, AND MAMMALS THAT CALL TOHONO CHUL HOME. MONTHLY ON-SITE TRAININGS AND OFF-SITE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE PROFESSIONALIZATION OF OUR GARDENS TEAM, WHILE A COMPREHENSIVE OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE PLAN HAS ALLOWED US TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE LABOR NEEDS REQUIRED TO ELEVATE OUR GARDEN STANDARDS. FINALLY, TOHONO CHUL WAS OFFICIALLY ACCREDITED AS AN ARBORETUM BY ARBNET, THE ACCREDITATION PROGRAM RUN BY
