Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Since 2020, Free Flow NM has been dedicated to reducing period poverty and stigma around menstruation through seven key programs focused on education and distribution of menstrual supplies. Period poverty means that millions of individuals with periods are subjected to injustice and inequity due to menstruation. There is no federal program that assists with the costs of period products. EBT, WIC, and SNAP do not cover menstrual products, which are considered luxury items. Consequently, 1 in 3 low-income individuals with periods report missing work, school, or similar events due to inadequate access to period supplies. We aim to bridge this gap so individuals can stay fully engaged in their lives.

Our distribution efforts span Santa Fe, Rio Arriba, Los Alamos, Taos, Colfax, and San Miguel counties, including the Eight Northern Pueblos.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Period Pod Program: Similar to the Little Libraries you may find in your community, our pods are filled with period products. Each Pod holds up to 100 kits per month, with the quantity adjusted based on community demand and population size. Each kit contains a 1-month supply of period products. These innovative pods provide year-round access to period products, ensuring that anyone can obtain them with complete anonymity. There are no forms to fill out or registration required, reducing barriers for individuals to access essential period products. We currently have 6 Period Pods, with 6 more planned for the first half of 2025. In 2024 we distributed 6,040 period kits which equates to 151,000 period products.-$29,598
General Distribution: Each month our 90+ volunteers build period kits filled with a monthly supply of period products. The kits are distributed to over 100 community organizations across Northern New Mexico. We also offer home delivery for individuals with transportation barriers. In 2024 we distributed 5,800 period kits which equates to 145,000 period products.$0$22,200
Menstrual Education and Period Kit Building: As a response to systemic inequities both on the individual and community levels, Free Flow NM provides education and hands-on programming to schools, organizations, and businesses. This program educates students and community members about the menstrual cycle, its associated challenges, and period poverty, which often remains an unspoken personal struggle. Then, the group creates 100-period kits that can be used in their school or distributed to others in their community. While affected individuals may be aware of these challenges, educators and community members may not fully grasp the extent of the issue of period poverty. Our mission is to dismantle the stigma surrounding menstruation through open dialogue. By involving participants in the assembly of period kits, they actively contribute to addressing this issue within their own community, fostering a profound sense of empowerment and connection. In 2024, we provided six presentations.$0$4,050
Reusable Period Products: As part of our commitment to sustainability and providing long-term solutions, each recipient of a period kit also receives an offer for complimentary reusable products, including period cups, underwear, and reusable pads. This initiative aims to alleviate financial burdens and mitigate obstacles associated with purchasing such items. At the same time, the program provides a sustainable solution that can alleviate the need for disposable products for up to 15 years. In 2024, we provided 139 reusable products.-$3,550
Community Days are collaborative events where Free Flow NM partners with local organizations to connect community members with vital resources. At each event, we distribute 100-150 period kits to ensure access to essential menstrual products, showcase reusable period options, and foster open conversations about menstruation. These events go beyond providing productsthey create opportunities for meaningful connections by engaging with everyone, including grandparents, caregivers, and male family members, to reduce stigma and normalize discussions around menstruation. Through Community Days, we aim to bridge gaps, empower individuals, and promote dignity and sustainability in menstrual health. In 2024, we participated in six community days distributing 575 period kits.-$1,800
Special Education Period Underwear: Discovering suitable menstrual products can significantly impact individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions, such as autism, intellectual disability, and cerebral palsy. Many of these individuals struggle with changes in routine and sensory sensitivities related to menstruation. Research indicates individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions often prefer period underwear due to its comfort and convenience. In response, we have launched a new program that aims to provide 5 pairs of period underwear to students in Special Education programs. This initiative offers a practical and comfortable solution to menstrual care for these students, promoting their independence, well-being, and dignity. In 2024, we provided 15 SPED students with 5-pairs of period underwear and finished raising the funds in Jan 2025 for 85 additional students, plus the ability to provide adaptable period underwear.$0$795
