Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
U.S. Africa Institute has three program accomplishments: 1. Academic Support Programs The Institute provides comprehensive academic support services to immigrant students, including tutoring, mentoring, college preparation workshops, and scholarship guidance. These services help improve educational outcomes and increase access to higher education. Over the past year, more than 1,200 immigrant students benefited from these programs at various campuses and community centers. 2. Public Diplomacy Programs Through public diplomacy initiatives, the Institute fosters cross-cultural understanding and strengthens relationships between the U.S. and African communities. This includes cultural events, speaker series, and academic exchange programs, engaging over 800 participants annually, such as students, educators, and community leaders. These efforts promote dialogue and collaboration that enhance international partnerships. 3. Immigration-Related Services and Know Your Rights Workshops The Institute offers immigration-related services including Know Your Rights workshops, legal referrals, and informational sessions for immigrant students and their families. These services empower over 1,000 individuals each year by providing essential knowledge about their rights and available resources, thereby supporting community safety and stability.$1-
Other Program Services Support for Immigrant and Undocumented Students The U.S. Africa Institute actively advocates for increased institutional support for undocumented and immigrant students on college campuses in the Los Angeles area and across the United States. These advocacy efforts focus on ensuring that higher education institutions adopt inclusive practices, expand student services, and create welcoming environments for students regardless of immigration status. The Institute collaborates directly with college and university leaders?including presidents, vice presidents, and student affairs professionals?to help them better understand and respond to the unique needs of immigrant student populations. This work includes policy recommendations, convening stakeholder meetings, and supporting the implementation of campus-based initiatives that improve access to education, mental health resources, legal support, and financial aid. Community Events and Cultural Engagement In partnership with the Los Angeles City Council and the Office of the Mayor, the U.S. Africa Institute has led and supported numerous African immigrant-focused community events that celebrate cultural heritage and promote civic participation. Major initiatives include the annual Africa Day celebration, Black History Month programming, and a variety of local cultural festivals and forums designed to build community cohesion and elevate the voices of African diaspora communities in Southern California. These events serve as a platform to recognize the contributions of African immigrants to the city?s social, cultural, and economic life, while also providing opportunities for engagement with local policymakers and civic leaders. University Partnership Initiatives The U.S. Africa Institute leverages its expansive network of U.S. and African higher education institutions to facilitate academic collaboration, knowledge exchange, and institutional development. Through formal partnerships, the Institute supports bilateral student and faculty exchange programs, joint research initiatives, curriculum co-development, and capacity-building efforts. These initiatives are designed to promote global learning, foster long-term relationships between universities, and strengthen educational ties between the United States and African nations. The Institute also works to identify and align funding opportunities, coordinate international fellowships, and convene cross-border academic dialogues to address shared challenges in education, public policy, and community development.$0$0
