CULTURE & EDUCATION - The Des Moines Black Liberation Movement Collective (DSM BLM Collective) supported inclusive, community-centered cultural and educational engagement aligned with its advocacy and direct action work. In July 2025, organizers attended the KC Defender-hosted Willa's Vinyl and Books Retirement Party in Kansas City, joining community members, artists, and organizers to celebrate the space's cultural significance while engaging in dialogue and informal learning. In October and November 2025, the organization coordinated and completed the deconstruction of the Black Children's Memorial Garden, a community space for reflection, education, and remembrance. Stewardship of the garden had been assumed from the DSM BLM Foundation, in anticipation of its dissolution on November 15, 2025. The deconstruction was carried out with care to honor the garden's significance while responsibly concluding its use, reflecting the organization's continued commitment to community engagement.$0$7,394
ADVOCACY & DIRECT ACTION - Due to financial constraints and the ongoing pursuit of mission-aligned funding, advocacy activities were limited during the year compared to prior periods. Organizers maintained a public presence primarily through social media by amplifying community education and calls to action, including commemorations of individuals who were victims of state and racial violence. These included Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Philando Castile, Sonya Massey, Jabari Peoples, Frank Embree, Joshua Williams, and Marcellus Khalifa Williams. These efforts centered on education, remembrance, and raising awareness of ongoing issues impacting Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color. DSM BLM Collective also supported and amplified advocacy efforts led by aligned local organizations. Limited direct actions - marches, rallies, or protests - were also organized during the year.$40$5,850
MUTUAL AID - DSM BLM Collective provided support and resources to Black and marginalized residents in Central Iowa to meet basic needs, enhance safety, and improve quality of life. Activities focused on connecting individuals and families to existing services and community-based support systems, including providing information and referrals related to housing stability and eviction prevention; supporting access to reproductive health resources and abortion doula services; and offering guidance and connections to crisis support during heat waves and other emergencies. The organization also assisted with distributing food and supplies through community fridges and pantries, and amplified fundraising and mutual aid efforts led by individuals and community partners. Additionally, the organization facilitated volunteer engagement, meal distribution, and strengthened mutual aid networks to support community-based resource sharing.$0$4,795
COMMUNICATIONS - The organization maintained an active communications presence through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and the DSM BLM Collective's website. Through these platforms, it shared and amplified information related to the work, campaigns, and actions of partner organizations and aligned movements, reaching a total audience of over 38,400 followers across all platforms as of its dissolution on February 27, 2026. In addition, the organization collaborated on content in connection with a podcast appearance to further support outreach and public engagement efforts.$0$2,155
