Mission and Program Overview

Mission

North Carolina Second Chance Community Development Corporation is a non-profit organization that helps citizens released from incarceration and their families achieve a successful re-entry back into society. We provide connections and restorative resources for participants both inside and outside of prison. These practices define who we are, how we work with the communities we serve, and how we train our volunteers.

North Carolina Second Chance Community Development Corporation's mission is to assist in reducing the recidivism rate and increasing productive citizenship within our communities. We concentrate our efforts to serve individuals released from incarceration, but we understand that any form of criminal justice involvement is a barrier to success, therefore we embrace all those who are system- impacted, formerly incarcerated and currently incarcerated, and families who are economically impacted.

NC Second Chance CDC received a generous $2,000 donation from Democracy North Carolina, an organization dedicated to strengthening democratic systems, empowering disenfranchised communities, and fostering confidence in a more inclusive and effective political process$0$0
Rental & Utility Assistance Program - rental & utility assistance is provided to help clients who are struggling with paying and who are behind on their rental & utility bills. Energy and water bill assistance is provided to clients who have received a disconnection notice from their utility or gas company. The rental assistance is provided to help clients with emergency rental payments who have received eviction or vacate notices from their current landlord or rental management company. The eligibility requirements were a household income below 50% of the area median income per household size, households with one or more member, currently unemployed or uder employed, reduction in household income or experienced financial hardship within the last 12 months, at risk of experiencing homelessness or housing instability, and individuals who are recently released and are registered in our reentry program. The goal was to assist 100% of the applicants who apply to the program and our budget was $10,000 for the year. Total mount spent in assistance was $10,749, and seventeen applicants or 20% of our total applicants were award rental or utilities assistance. This program coordinated with NC Works.$0$0
Our Financial Literacy Program plans to provide remote service delivery to individuals released from incarceration. Currently seeking grants for digital literacy and access to technology. Fifty-seven percent of Americans are considered financially literate and among those rates, individuals who are currently incarcerated are much lower. Financial literacy is important for reducing recidivism because many justice-involved citizens do not have a bank account and live paycheck to paycheck. We will provide a financial literacy program to assist the communities and give justice-involved citizens access to the education they need to build a solid financial foundation.$0$0
The North Carolina 2nd Chance CDC had the honor of being selected as one of 40 grantees for the social justice and racial equality grant from Duke Energy Foundation. The $25,000 will be an excellent opportunity to fund the Seven Core Components needed to achieve a successful re-entry back into society. Those components are: Employment, Education, Housing, Healthcare, Food/Clothing, Spiritual Guidance and Family reunification$0$0
