“Door county summer horizons (dchs) is a youth summer employment program in milwaukee, wisconsin for teens from disadvantaged neighborhoods. Dchs overcomes the structural impediments to working in door county by providing transportation, housing, meals, supervision, coaching/mentoring and access to summer jobs. Summer and part time jobs are foundational to young people's development into responsible and productive adults. In addition to great summer work, dcsh will provide enrichment in the form of hikes, bike rides, theater, art, music, fishing, boating and more. Additionally, the dcsh supervisors and mentors will conduct reading and writing workshops and a course in financial literacy.”

“In 2025, we welcomed eight new boys from disadvantaged neighborhoods in milwaukee. The boys handled the challenge of their first summer job well and enjoyed the enrichment available in door county. Dcsh worked with employer partners who served as caring mentors for the boys. The boys took swimming lessons and completed a course in financial literacy. Consistent with previous years, all the boys finished the program with new skills, confidence, a deep appreciation for the outdoors, and over 2,000.00 for their first savings account. All of the boys planned to graduate from high school.”
