Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Social creatures, inc., bridges science, technology, and advocacy to ensure that any individual can connect with others, no matter the circumstances during covid-19 and beyond, through the creation and mobilization of equitable social infrastructure. Social creatures, inc., strives to ensure that no one feels lonely or disconnected from others due to inequities in social and/or structural support in their environment.

Social Creatures is a social innovation nonprofit addressing the public-health crisis of loneliness and social isolation. Our mission is to advance social health - the aspect of well-being that comes from our relationships, connections, and sense of belonging - as a vital pillar of overall health. Through our three core strategies - innovate, educate, and advocate - we transform scientific evidence and community wisdom into solutions that strengthen connection, reduce loneliness, and improve mental and physical health outcomes. We co-create programs with communities most affected by social disconnection, including people impacted by disability, caregiving, low income, immigration barriers, and social or cultural exclusion. Together, we're building a future where social health is recognized, resourced, and integrated across healthcare, policy, and community systems, so that no one is left out of the connections that sustain or restore well-being.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

Preparation of a draft by the external accountant. This draft is first reviewed internally by senior management to check for accuracy and completeness. Next, the finance committee examines the draft to ensure that it aligns with the organization's financial statements and includes all necessary disclosures. The draft is then distributed to the full board of directors, either electronically or in a board meeting, for their review and feedback. Board members are given the opportunity to ask questions or request clarifications, promoting a clear understanding of the form's content. Any feedback or suggested revisions from the board are reviewed by the financial team, and adjustments are made as needed. The final version of the Form 990 is then formally approved by the board or a designated officer before being signed and submitted to the IRS. Throughout this process, the organization maintains thorough documentation, including board meeting minutes and records of communications, to ensure compliance and transparency.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Our organization actively monitors compliance with its conflict of interest policy by requiring annual disclosures from board members, officers, and key employees. Each individual must complete a conflict of interest statement, disclosing any potential conflicts. If a conflict arises, it is reviewed by the board or a designated committee, which takes appropriate actions to manage or resolve the conflict, including recusal from decision-making when necessary.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

Our organization makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements available to the public upon request.

Form 990, Part III, Line 2

In 2024, Social Creatures launched a new research and innovation initiative to address the growing crisis of loneliness among young adults now the loneliest demographic by age in the United States. With catalytic funding from Pinterest, we conducted a mixed methods research and design process through our Social Innovation Lab to uncover the root causes of loneliness in this population and identify high impact, community driven solutions. This included nationwide surveys, focus groups, an umbrella review of academic literature, and co design sessions with a lived experience advisory board. Findings revealed that LGBTQ+ young adults are disproportionately affected by loneliness and lack access to safe, identity-affirming spaces for connection. In response, we are now developing a pilot-ready intervention to create protective third spaces that foster belonging, shared purpose, and emotional safety. This work represents a significant expansion of Social Creatures? mission to advance social health and mental well-being through community-rooted innovation.

Form 990, Part III, Line 3

In partnership with NABU, Social Creatures launched NABU Learning Labs, a collaborative research initiative designed to strengthen literacy development efforts by exploring the role of social connection and belonging in learning. The project aimed to generate strategic, data-driven insights to inform NABUs global programming while contributing to more inclusive and actionable research on the science of learning. NABU Learning Labs was discontinued in 2024 following the successful completion of its planned research and programmatic goals.

IRS990/Desc0Bonded by Baby / Vinculados por el Bebe transforms postpartum health by embedding social and emotional care into routine care across the first year of parenthood. The program brings together new parents - matched by birth timing and location - for ongoing group sessions and one-on-one check-ins led by licensed social workers. Offered in English, Spanish, and Chinese, sessions are professionally facilitated to promote emotional well-being, strengthen coping skills, and foster peer connection and parent-infant bonding in a safe, inclusive space. Implemented in partnership with healthcare providers, Bonded by Baby is currently piloting coverage through both Medicaid and private insurance to ensure equitable access to care. Early trial results show statistically significant improvements in mental and social health outcomes - including reduced loneliness, postpartum depression, anxiety, and stress, as well as stronger parent-infant bonding - compared to non-participants.

IRS990/MissionDesc0Social Creatures is a social innovation nonprofit addressing the public-health crisis of loneliness and social isolation.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0The Young Adult Loneliness Project is the newest initiative within our Social Innovation Lab, focused on the age group reporting the highest levels of loneliness in the U.S. - young adults aged 18-25. Grounded in community-based research, the project combines literature reviews, surveys, and focus groups with young adults from diverse racial, socioeconomic, and geographic backgrounds who have personally experienced loneliness and isolation. Insights from this process inform a structured participatory design phase in which young adults collaborate directly with researchers, clinicians, and program developers to prototype and refine practical, evidence-informed solutions that strengthen connection, belonging, and well-being among their peers.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0In addition to direct programs, Social Creatures drives systemic change through science communication and advocacy to elevate social health as a vital component of overall well-being. Our science communication platform, The Creature Times, translates emerging social health research into accessible and actionable content that reaches global audiences. In 2024, it drew over 48,000 readers across 101 countries, with nearly 70,000 page views. Through our advocacy work, we partner with healthcare institutions and policy networks to embed social health into practice and reform. In 2024, we contributed to the world's first Public Health Guidelines for Social Connection, conducted research with communities most affected by disconnection to inform more equitable policy and practice reforms, and participated in national coalitions to advance equity-driven agendas. We also partnered with healthcare institutions to pilot social health education initiatives and published a widely shared call-to-action urging the integration of social health into clinical care. Together, these efforts advance a single aim: ensuring that every system shaping human health recognizes social connection as essential to health and well-being.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0In 2024, Social Creatures launched a new research and innovation initiative to address the growing crisis of loneliness among young adults now the loneliest demographic by age in the United States.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1In partnership with NABU, Social Creatures launched NABU Learning Labs, a collaborative research initiative designed to strengthen literacy development efforts by exploring the role of social connection and belonging in learning. The project aimed to generate strategic, data-driven insights to inform NABUs global programming while contributing to more inclusive and actionable research on the science of learning. NABU Learning Labs was discontinued in 2024 following the successful completion of its planned research and programmatic goals.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4Preparation of a draft by the external accountant.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt5Our organization actively monitors compliance with its conflict of interest policy by requiring annual disclosures from board members, officers, and key employees. Each individual must complete a conflict of interest statement, disclosing any potential conflicts. If a conflict arises, it is reviewed by the board or a designated committee, which takes appropriate actions to manage or resolve the conflict, including recusal from decision-making when necessary.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt6Our organization makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements available to the public upon request.
