West Virginia Alliance for Creative Health Solutions (WVACHS) is a primary care practice-based research network (PBRN) leading patient-centered and community-oriented research to bring solutions to priority health disparities and health issues in the state.

| Appalachian Pulmonary Health Project. In July of 2024, the WVACHS initiated support for the Appalachian Pulmonary Health Project (APHP) a peer review network with the mission of prevention, early diagnosis, and rehabilitation for chronic lung disease. The APHP operates two related programs: 1) A youth vaping prevention program called "CATCH My Breath;" 2) The network of respiratory therapists who bring pulmonary rehabilitation to remote rural areas. In school year 2023-2024, the youth vaping prevention program delivered the nationally recognized CATCH My Breath curriculum to 4600 students in 25 West Virginia middle schools. Participating schools receive cash wellness awards based on the number of students who complete the curriculum. Program evaluation includes cloud-based, anonymous student pre and post-tests. In calendar year 2024, respiratory therapists in the pulmonary rehabilitation peer-network provided services to 270 individuals with advanced chronic lung disease at 10 sites in West Virginia. Patients completing treatment receive stipends for gas mileage and financial assistance with co-pays. | $21,900 | $39,294 |
| Health Care Research and Dissemination. The West Virginia Alliance for Creative Health Solutions, Inc. (WVACHS) is an interdisciplinary practice-based research network (PBRN) of primary care clinicians, administrators, and public health leaders engaged in research to improve health and health care systems for West Virginians, particularly those who are underserved. We focus on research related to primary and preventive care for low income and disadvantaged populations and dissemination of results to improve practice, policy, and public opinion. WVACHS clinician researchers conduct research activities on a voluntary basis, alongside their primary care clinical practices. We engage interested medical and other health professions students in practice-based research projects during their clinical rotations and support their interest with tools, training, and research expertise. To support clinician researchers, in 2024 WVACHS contracted with a Data Scientist as well as two part-time Research Assistants, both current medical students, who contribute to all phases of research while they hone their own research skills. In 2024, WVACHS members completed work on four projects: 1) Water Quality and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD); 2) Patient Transportation Barriers in Rural Primary Care; 3) West Virginia's Clear Future - Vaping Prevention Program Evaluation; 4) Insurance Coverage for Anti-Obesity Medications: Policy Impacts. In 2024, WVACHS members had four articles published in peer-reviewed open access journals. In addition, WVACHS members presented research findings at two national and regional conferences in 2024. Ongoing projects include: 1) FOODWISE: Feasible Obesity Outreach and Dietary Wellness in Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Communities; 2) Racial Bias in Pulse Oximetry for Black Lung Disease Patients; 3) Foster Closets Community Needs Assessment; 4) Hepatitis C Treatment Access Study. | Program Evaluation. The WVACHS provides tailored program evaluation services to support community- and clinic-based initiatives and inform decision-making. Our evaluation work is grounded in collaborative partnerships, applied data use, and clear communication of impact. Efforts include assessing the reach and effectiveness of the CATCH My Breath vaping prevention curriculum within West Virginia middle schools. | Research Mentorship Program. The WVACHS operates a Research Mentorship program to support emerging practice-based researchers through mentoring and stipends to practicing clinicians who engage medical and other health professions students in research projects. In 2024, WVACHS members had four articles published in peer-reviewed open access journals. In addition, WVACHS members presented research findings at two national and regional conferences in 2024. Ongoing projects include: 1) FOODWISE: Feasible Obesity Outreach and Dietary Wellness in Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Communities; 2) Racial Bias in Pulse Oximetry for Black Lung Disease Patients; 3) Foster Closets Community Needs Assessment; 4) Hepatitis C Treatment Access Study. In July of 2024, the WVACHS initiated support for the Appalachian Pulmonary Health Project (APHP) a peer review network with the mission of prevention, early diagnosis, and rehabilitation for chronic lung disease. The APHP operates two related programs: 1) A youth vaping prevention program called "CATCH My Breath;" 2) The network of respiratory therapists who bring pulmonary rehabilitation to remote rural areas. In school year 2023-2024, the youth vaping prevention program delivered the nationally recognized CATCH My Breath curriculum to 4600 students in 25 West Virginia middle schools. Participating schools receive cash wellness awards based on the number of students who complete the curriculum. Program evaluation includes cloud-based, anonymous student pre and post-tests. In calendar year 2024, respiratory therapists in the pulmonary rehabilitation peer-network provided services to 270 individuals with advanced chronic lung disease at 10 sites in West Virginia. Patients completing treatment receive stipends for gas mileage and financial assistance with co-pays. |
