Our law firm, pillsbury winthrop shaw pittman, provided us with a pro bono junior attorney for nine months under its first-year deferred junior associate program. Typically, pwsp and other law firms use this kind of program to place first-year associates in public defenders' offices. In this case, the attorney, mr. Khurram chippa, had special interest in using the opportunity to gain experience in nonprofits and marketing, so pwsp adapted the program so he could work pro bono for us. Under the terms of the agreement with pwsp, pwsp made a donation of $45,000 to usic to cover salary and all other costs of mr. Chippa's tenure with us, including salary and any benefits we mutually agreed on with him.

Activity 3

On july 15, 2011, usic entered into an agreement to introduce oxyplasma (a synthetic blood substitute) to the dod for surgical use and battlefield trauma management. Developed by the mensa corporation, the product is being presented to the fda for acceptance into phase ii trials. Usic's role includes working with the product developer, the dod, and the third party advisor to translate end user requirements into an acceptable testing configuration. Oxyplasma reduces the dependency for human blood reserves which could be tainted with disease (hiv and hepatitis). Its application is designed for significant blood loss situations. Synthetic blood advantages also include ease of transport and storage (long shelf-life). Usic anticipates that these advantages will reduce the burden on government.
