Mission

To promote a philosophy of independent living, including consumer control, peer support, self-help, self-determination, equal access, and individual and system advocacy, in order to maximize the leadership, empowerment, independence, and productivity of individuals with disabilities and the integration and full inclusion of individuals with disabilities into the mainstream of american society.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 11B

A copy of the 990 is provided to the executive directo and cfo who review the form, schedules and related attachments. Any comments or questions are addressed with the preparer and a final draft is reviewed by the board of directors who then approve the 990. Once management is satisfied with the 990, the executive director signs the form 8879-te authorizing the preparer to e-file the return.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 12C

Board members receive, review, and sign the conflict of interest policy when they become a member. Ongoing enforcement occurs through self disclosure as potential issues may arise during the member's term. If an issue arises, the interested person is excused from the meeting and the issue is voted on. The executive director monitors and enforces the policy. The executive director oversees all business dealings with outside entities and monitors whether they may run counter to the conflict of interest policy by applying the principle of unusual gains to every transaction and/or contract.

The executive director utilizes the new mexico workforce solutions website data on wages for the albuquerque area, as well as comparative analyses of similar non-profit form 990's on guidestar.org to determine an appropriate average compensation for the position and makes recommendations to the board, which either rejects or approves the salary recommendations.

The center is exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code, except for income, if any, from activities unrelated to the center's exempt purpose. The center evaluates uncertain tax positions whereby the effect of the uncertainty would be recorded if the outcome was considered probable and reasonably estimable. As of september 30, 2024 and 2023, the center had no uncertain tax positions requiring accrual.
