DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Community Outreach - Our volunteer teams of residents conducted weekly door-to-door outreach efforts to ensure Detroit residents were aware of the Governor's Executive Order on water service restorations for disconnected households to protect public health. They distributed information on water assistance and plumbing programs in low-income neighborhoods where residents may be impacted but not aware of declarations and services by local and state governments. The teams also collected contact information on residents who had immediate needs such as bottled water delivery or other social service support. We reached nearly 7,200 households and helped social service managers and city officials better understand the risks and concerns of impacted households.$0$37,149
Advocacy - Over the year we worked across a network of organizations and communities to bring greater awareness to the growing problem of unaffordable water sewage and stormwater bills. We discussed with community leaders and elected leaders what we learned in our community outreach work and consulted with residents in regional cities about similar concerns. We met with state representatives and officials to educate them about pandemic-related concerns with high water bills economic hardship and accounts in arrearage. We also consulted with policy makers academic institutions and foundations on how to promote polices and programs that could protect vulnerable residents especially in low-income communities of color. We believe that a range of 300 to 500 residents and leaders directly benefitted from our advocacy efforts and more than 1,000 indirectly benefitted.$0$26,466
Public Education - We utilized digital billboards to promote the importance of residential water service restorations and public health during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. We placed four billboards ads on four different state M-10 and M-39 and interstate highways I-75 and I-96 in a four-week campaign to educate drivers traveling through the City of Detroit. SEMCOG estimates indicate a range of 25,400 to 91,400 vehicles per days on each highway. We believe these educational signs provided an important public service and reminder about the importance of handwashing and water access to reduce the spread of the deadly virus.$0$7,500
