Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The guatemala family development organization is dedicated to supporting the basic food, medical supplies, wellness education, and young women education to a very rural area in the alta verapaz area of guatemala. There are over 4,000 individuals living in 13 communities which we support. 75% of the families live below the poverty level. Living in this area requires at least a half day to walk to the nearest town. This area was devastated as a result of the 2 hurricanes 2 years ago and then covid-19 emerged in guatemala in 2021 which further increased the challenge of living. Therefore, the following areas were identified that we had the capability to help: humanitarian aid, scholarships for young women, and community development.

Gfd works to support and elevate the health, well-being, and education of indigenous mayan children and families in remote, rural guatemalan communities through philanthropy, aid, and in-person service. Together, with our ngo partner in verapaz, we create and implement sustainable solutions to the tragic reality facing mayan communities, including: ~ 80% of children are chronically malnourished. ~ only 1% have access to clean drinking water. ~ 5% of girls reach 3rd grade. ~ 10% of communities have any source of electricity. ~ 90% of adults are illiterate - even fewer speak spanish. ~ 1% of communities have proper sanitation. ~ 75% of children, under age 8, have intestinal parasites. ~ 80% of people earn less than 2 per day/10 hours of manual work. The mayan communities we support do not have access to electricity, safe drinking water, proper sanitation, adequate schools (especially for girls) sustainable food sources, passable roads, or reliable medical care. There is minimal government support, advocacy, or protection for indigenous mayans in guatemala. The region has also been severely impacted by covid, climate change, and drought which has exacerbated regional and life difficulties. Gfd works in 10 communities, serving nearly 4,000 people to combat the worsening crisis presented by covid and hurricanes. Over the past 3 years, we provided programs including: humanitarian care, education for girls, medical clinics, clean drinking water, and health education.
