Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To conduct scientific research within the meaning of section 501(c)(3)

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Program Service #1: Biomass storage research. Exaquest Carbon launched (and continued) the wood chip drying and storage experiment on the property of Dr. Arnold Forman in Nevada City, CA. Additional materials were purchased to finalize the experimental setup, and in January 2022, Dr. Forman installed equipment that allowed the 12-volt battery to be recharged directly from a solar panel. This Nevada City experiment has yielded an impressive amount of data showing essentially 0% dry matter loss, and surprisingly efficient drying of the chips inside the container. In June 2022, the tank was capped, and we began collecting data showing that the dry wood inside the container will remain dry indefinitely without decomposing. This data collection is ongoing. Another major research accomplishment this year was Exaquests demonstration of wood chip drying and storage for the XPRIZE Carbon Removal competition. Exaquest received a $50,000 grant for this work from The Sky Foundation in late November 2021 and was required to submit experimental results for the XPRIZE by February 1, 2022. To meet this very tight deadline (as we successfully did), Exaquest engaged Forest Concepts, LLC to conduct the necessary experiments, which were successful and showed complete drying of wood chips (from ~60% moisture to ~10% moisture) at a reasonable energy cost over a period of ~30 days with no measurable dry matter loss. In parallel with the XPRIZE work, Exaquest entered into a 12-month lease (1/1/2022 through 12/31/2022) for ~1500 square feet of light industrial workspace in Alameda, CA. As soon as Forest Concepts XPRIZE work was finished in February 2022, Forest Concepts shipped the experimental equipment it had used (i.e., 55-gallon drums with attached fans) to Exaquests Alameda workspace, and Exaquest immediately began conducting additional wood drying and storage experiments with that equipment. Those experiments are ongoing. In May and June 2022, Exaquest made preparations and purchased equipment in order to conduct an even larger wood drying and storage experiment in its Alameda workspace. This experiment, which involves ~1100 lbs of wood (i.e., ~10 times more wood than Exaquests previous 55-gallon drum experiments), was launched on June 30, 2022 and is ongoing.$0$65,648
Program Service #2: Outreach to inform the public and other interested groups about the potential for long-term biomass storage to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Exaquest Carbons directors and officers engaged in numerous informational outreach activities over the course of the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2022. Exaquest president John Lin and Exaquest CTO Dr. Amber Janda co-moderated an AirMiners expert panel discussion on Biomass Harvesting and Storage as a CO2 removal technology. John and Amber were also interviewed by Swarnav Pujari of the YouTube channel The Impact (in September 2021) and Oluwaloni Olowookere of greenstand.org (in October 2021). In addition, in late February 2022, John and Amber presented the key results from Exaquests XPRIZE experiments to the Biomass & Bioenergy Research Group at the University of British Columbia. Finally, John and Amber regularly posted updates about Exaquests work on social media (LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) and on climate-focused Slack groups including My Climate Journey, AirMiners, and Work on Climate. All of these outreach activities resulted in large increases in traffic on Exaquests website (www.exaquest.org), which was redesigned by an experienced professional during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2022, and which provides additional information to the public about the potential for long-term biomass storage to remove CO2 from the atmosphere.$0$2,884
