“The ablevoices mission is to amplify the voices of people with disabilities through the powerful medium of photography, ultimately fostering more inclusive communities. Our main programs teach photography to individuals with disabilities as a means for self-expression, advocacy, creativity and work-based learning.”
“Photography for self-expression: this is our foundational program and is offered to to youth and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities ages 14 and up. We offer this program to classrooms and individuals in schools and community organizations, as well as virtually. This program provides access to a creative mode of communication and for participants to share about themselves through the powerful, visual medium of photography. The culminating event of each project is a public gallery exhibit for the photographers to share their work (and ultimately themselves) with the community.”
“Ablevoices photography club: ablevoices teaches photography to youth and adults with disabilities at educational and scenic locations all throughout middle tennessee. We offer photography club outings each week in the summer and monthly from september-may. Ablevoices photographers exhibit their work in venues such as libraries, art crawls, conference centers, museums, and other locations for the public to view. Our photographers also sell their photographs at local markets and fairs, via our website, and also at retail locations in the community.”
“Photo-advocacy program: ablevoices creates photographs about people with disabilities and the people and organizations involved in their lives. We are passionate about creating photographic bodies of work that explore themes of disability and diversity to promote awareness, acceptance, and inclusion in our communities. In addition, an important part of this program is that ablevoices photography club photographers are provided with work-based learning opportunities. These youth and adults with disabilities assist professional photographers during project shoots and prepare for these experiences by attending trainings that teach these skills. 1. Ablevoices created the photography for the vanderbilt kennedy center's 'kindred stories of disabilities' booklet. The images accompanied stories of individuals with disabilities, caregivers and professional regarding mental health conditions and services throughout tennessee. The booklets were given to all tn state legislators on disability day on the hill and to federal legislators at the disability policy seminar in washington dc. The goal is toinform law makers on the needs of individuals with disabilities and issues that affect them so that positive change is made at the government level. 2. Ablevoices also received a grant for our project, "mental health through expressive imagery"._”
