Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
In 2024, BBS enjoyed another full season of our core programming, conducting weekly practices from May through August at our host center, Boston's Community Boating, Inc (CBI,). These practices usually consisted of various drills, starts and short races. The participation numbers for blind and sighted sailors and volunteers remained the same as 2023 levels. We are looking to increase participation in all categories in 2025. Coach Nolan Cooper returned to conduct our weekly practices. In early February, Duane Farrar and Sam Peirson, along with six CBI staff members, traveled to U.S. Sailing's National Sailing Programs Symposium in Savannah, Georgia. Along with visually impaired sailor Kris Scheppe from Naples, Florida, Duane and Sam gave a presentation at the Savannah Yacht Club on Blind Sailing. The focus of the presentation was on how other sailing centers can accommodate and begin sailing programs for blind & visually impaired sailors. In early March, Duane Farrar, Willi Fontanez, Sam Peirson, Andrew Alletag and Nolan Cooper traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana, to assist in conducting a match racing clinic using audible buoys at the Community Sailing Center. Prior to the clinic, they gave a presentation and demonstrated the audible buoys to a group of about 30 blind & visually impaired people at the New Orleans Lighthouse for the Blind. In early June, the Robie Pierce One Design Regatta for Disabled Sailors was held on Western Long Island Sound in New York at the American Yacht Club in Rye. BBS was represented by blind sailor Duane Farrar and sighted guide Solomon Marini. They sailed with a blind sailor from New York City. The Boston Blind Open (BBO) Sailing Regatta took place at CBI on August 31. Blind & visually impaired sailors from the Carroll Center's SailBlind Saturday recreational program who had an interest in racing were invited to take part in the regatta. Sighted sailors and tacticians were recruited from BBS, SailBlind, Clagett Sailing and CBI's Tiller Club. There were five Sonar teams of two blind or visually impaired and two sighted sailors who were treated to a sunny, windy day of racing. In typical Charles River fashion, they experienced a 180 degree wind shift just prior to the start of one race. Coach Nolan and his Race Committee had their hands full as they successfully ran a total of eight races for the sailors.$0$2,468
