Our primary purpose is to promote, present, and produce inclusive and equitable dance education, performance, and community engagement projects, as well as fund various dance grants focused on the underserved as a method to enrich the well-being of our local community today, and into the future
The benefits of arts education is so well studied and documented that arts programming is mandated by the California education code, yet 88% of CA public schools are not offering arts education. The principles of social-emotional learning are an integral part of education. It is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions. Multiple studies all concur that these are the exact attributes which can be developed through engaging with dance. The Palm Springs Dance Project exists to energize positive social change and influence the development of underserved youth through dance performance, education and community engagement projects.
| Description | Grants | Expenses |
|---|---|---|
| Professional Presentation Projects include events that foster the art form, inspire young practitioners, support working artists, and connect local community together to the wider dance community. They also serve to inspire community support and donations for the sake of the art form. This year's Main Event, a professional presentation of immersive dance brought together 196 attendees. The program created professional paid internship grant opportunities for locals: 3 advanced youth dancers and 3 semi-professional adult dancers were awarded these paid internships. These dancers trained and performed with the professionals. In keeping with our goal to support working artists, 7 professional dancers were hired, as were 3 professional choreographers. | $0 | $46,740 |
| Education & Community Event Projects like Dancin in the Streets, The Dance Film, Communities Finest Dance Showcase, and participating in the Health and Wellness Fest equitably bring together diverse demographics and provide free professional training, exposure, and culminate into free dance experiences and performance opportunities for the local community. This year our community projects included Communities' Finest Dance Showcase, where more than a dozen diverse dance styles were performed primarily by local groups of student and cultural dancers that numbered over 60 participants. It included one group from the L.A. area that brought 12 dancers. 75% of the groups participating were granted into the program. 357 were in attendance. We also hosted the 18 member dance team of Desert Hot Springs High School at the Health and Wellness Festival, providing them a performance and fundraising opportunity. More than 800 participants flowed through the event. The High School dance team was able to raise $300.00 that day enabling them to participate in a national competition, as well as getting connected to a local social media influencer to help with future fund-raising. That school is situated within a community that has a 26% poverty rate. | $0 | $4,710 |
| Scholarships and Grants - Scholarships and grants create enriching growth opportunities that might otherwise never cross the paths of our recipients. A majority of these are targeted at the underserved in our community, while some may be based more heavily on awarding important achievements and admirable efforts to encourage these traits. This year we provided 10 local youth micro-scholarship awards for underserved students attending classes at local InMovement Dance, who caters to underserved students. We also awarded a 60 day dance administration office internship that included a $630 stipend award for a long-time participant in our programs for the underserved, as she entered the community college this year to study kinesiology. Also, as mentioned in the Professional Presentation section, there were 6 dancers who received professional internship grants this year, which included monetary stipends ranging from $300 to $400. | $1,160 | $2,353 |
