“Trap camp was a new program introduced in 2023. Trap camp was not funded in 2022 but was funded in 2021. In 2023, we were able to budget our funds to support trap camp.”
“In 2023, the rap school program selected 15 talented jcps students from six schoolshudson middle, atkinson elementary school, dubois middle and high school, western middle school for the arts, and meyzeek middle schoolto perform alongside the louisville orchestra during two major events: the "making music" concert series and "music without borders." these performances provided students with a unique opportunity to showcase their artistry on a professional stage. Each participating school serves diverse student populations, with many students coming from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and underrepresented communities. As part of the partnership with these schools, hip hop into learning (hhn2l) offered learning activities integrated into the school day, engaging students through music education and creative expression. This collaborative effort not only nurtures students' artistic development but also reinforces hhn2ls commitment to using hip hop as a tool for education, community building, and personal growth.”
“In 2023, trap camp celebrated the birthplace of hip hop in brooklyn, new york, by taking 20 students, along with 2 parent volunteers and 3 teachers, to the hiphoped conference. The conference, themed "reflect, respond, reimagine: incorporating hip-hop culture in education," was held on june 3, 2023, at the mott haven educational campus in the bronx. Students had the opportunity to explore hip hop's global impact and its ability to inspire youth across generations to make changes that affect us globally. The conferences objectives were to foster innovation, scholarship, and practice; provide a collaborative space for educators to connect; and highlight hip hop's creative elements. This experience aligned seamlessly with trap camps mission to engage youth in environmental justice and social awareness through music and storytelling. In addition to the hiphoped conference, students explored other significant hip-hop education events in 2023, including "you believe in me," an event hosted by east carolina universitys college of education in honor of hip hops 50th anniversary. This event featured notable hip-hop scholars and artists, further enhancing students' understanding of the cultures history and educational relevance. Through these immersive experiences, trap camp empowers youth to use hip hop as a lens to address contemporary social issues and strengthen their voices as advocates, aligning with hhn2ls broader vision to promote education, advocacy, and personal development through the power of hip hop. This experience was essential for students to learn about the larger impact of connecting globally with others to create a better world for all. By building relationships with students, educators, and hip-hop advocates across the country, trap camp participants recognized their role in a worldwide movement and learned how local actions contribute to global change.”
“The real young prodigys (tryp) program began in co-founder nyree clayton- taylors classroom and utilizes education and hip hop to engage students in learning through writing, recording, performing, and public speaking. In the fourth quarter of 2023, students re-created their signature song, crown, to express their voices for wearing natural hair. This song became a tool to inspire other students in the community to engage with state government and participate in a hair celebration at kentucky state university. During winter break, 40 students from ages 8-17, dedicated themselves to learning dance and performance for the song, crown, showcasing their commitment to both creativity and community engagement. To further expand the programs reach, those 40 students along with 500 students from 20 jcps schools were able to experience a combined visit to the frankfort capitol with a college tour and hair celebration at the historic kentucky state university (ksu). As the only land-grant hbcu in kentucky, ksu holds historic significance for advancing education in agriculture, engineering, and military training, while promoting practical, impactful knowledge. This initiative allowed 540 students to explore both higher education and state government in a single day. During their visit to ksu, students learned about the universitys legacy and role in promoting equity and access to education, inspiring them to consider future academic paths. At the frankfort capitol, students gained firsthand insight into the workings of state government, met with legislators, and developed civic awareness and leadership skills. As part of the convening, students from the tryp program used their voices to express their experiences, delivering speeches to legislators and speaking on behalf of their community. This dual experience reflects the tryp programs commitment to equipping youth with the knowledge and inspiration needed to advocate for themselves and their communities. It also aligns with hip hop into learnings (hhn2l) mission to engage students through education, advocacy, and real-world experiences, empowering them to use their talents to create meaningful change.”

| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc | 0 | IN 2023, TRAP CAMP CELEBRATED THE BIRTHPLACE OF HIP HOP IN BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, BY TAKING 20 STUDENTS, ALONG WITH 2 PARENT VOLUNTEERS AND 3 TEACHERS, TO THE HIPHOPED CONFERENCE. BY BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH STUDENTS, EDUCATORS, AND HIP-HOP ADVOCATES ACROSS THE COUNTRY, TRAP CAMP PARTICIPANTS RECOGNIZED THEIR ROLE IN A WORLDWIDE MOVEMENT AND LEARNED HOW LOCAL ACTIONS CONTRIBUTE TO GLOBAL CHANGE. |
