IRS990ScheduleF/Form990ScheduleFPartV/Explanation0SCHEDULE F, PART I, LINE 2: GRANTS OF $150 ARE MADE TO GROUPS OF THREE PEOPLE TO START A BUSINESS THROUGH THE ORGANIZATION'S RURAL ENTREPRENEUR ACCESS PROJECT (REAP). THE GROUPS ARE ASSSEMBLED BY BOMA VILLAGE MENTORS, TRAINED LOCAL RESIDENTS WHO FORM THE GROUPS, HELP THEM FILL OUT A GRANT APPLICATION AND BUSINESS PLAN AND SUBSEQUENTLY PROVIDE THE TRAINING TO THE BUSINESS GROUP. ELIGIBILITY IS DETERMINED BY A BOMA STANDARD OF LIVING INDEX (SOLI)THAT QUALIFIES PARTICIPANTS AS BELOW THE POVERTY LINE. ONCE THE SOLI IS REVIEWED FOR ELIGIBILITY, THE BUSINESS APPLICATION IS REVIEWED AND APPROVED. GRANTS ARE DISTRIBUTED TWO TO THREE TIMES PER YEAR AT THE BUSINESS SKILLS TRAINING PROGRAM THAT ASSEMBLES ALL OF THE ELIGIBLE GROUPS IN A VILLAGE SETTING. THE INITIAL GRANT OF $100 IS GIVEN TO THE MENTORS IN EXCHANGE FOR A RECEIPT AND THEN THE MENTORS DISTRIBUTE THE GRANTS IN A PUBLIC SETTING, WITH BOMA STAFF PRESENT, TO THE BUSINESS GROUPS WHO ALL EITHER SIGN OR PROVIDE A THUMBPRINT ON A RECEIPT. AT THREE MONTHS A PROGRESS REPORT IS FILLED OUT BY THE MENTOR WHO REVIEWS EACH GROUP'S PROGRESS. IF THE PROGRESS REPORT IS APPROVED, THEN A SECOND AND FINAL GRANT IS DISTRIBUTED ($50)BY BOMA STAFF TO THE MENTOR AGAIN IN A PUBLIC SETTING. THE MENTORS SIGN RECEIPTS AND THE GRANT IS THEN GIVEN TO THE BUSINESS GROUP WHO IN TURN SIGN OR PROVIDE THUMBPRINTS FOR A RECEIPT. COPIES OF ALL RECEIPTS FROM THE VILLAGE MENTORS AND REAP PARICIPANTS ARE KEPT IN THE BOMA KENYA AND US OFFICES.
IRS990ScheduleF/Form990ScheduleFPartV/Explanation1SCHEDULE F, PART I, LINE 3: THE ORGANIZATION ACCOUNTS FOR EXPENDITURES IN THE REGION BY UTILIZING THE ACCRUAL METHOD OF ACCOUNTING WITH MONTH END CUT-OFFS.
