Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11B

The Form 990 was prepared by the outside accountants and reviewed internally by the Executive Director and Controller.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

All board members and employees are required to sign a Conflict-of-Interest Policy annually. Should a conflict arise, the interested person discloses the conflict, and recuses themselves from voting on the matter.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15A

The Board reviewed the Executive Director's compensation details using a survey of several similar organizations to ISET. The board also had a salary survey from the Colorado Association of Nonprofits and Insidengo from DC. Based on this data, the Board set the compensation of the Executive Director. Their deliberation and decision was documented in the board minutes.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

The Organization makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements available to the public upon request.

IRS990/Desc0ISET'S work bridges the science-policy-implementation divide across regions and cultures. We are engaged in both basic research and applied implementation activities, with a particular focus on the translation of global natural and social scientific insights into local contexts in a manner that improves understanding and enables action. We also analyze the implications of local physical, cultural, economic and other system dynamics for global and high-level policy and strategy. ISET's activities combine knowledge generation, learning and the incubation of innovative strategies through pilot scale implementation.

IRS990ScheduleA/FactsAndCircumstancesTestTxt0The Institute for Social and Environmental Transition International (ISET-International) was founded in 1997 to address water issues in South Asia. Founders were curious to learn how rapidly expanding communities in India and Nepal, already facing water scarcity and management challenges, could prepare for and adapt to the additional stresses that growing population and other changes would bring. ISET-International has since grown into an organization that works not only in South Asia but around the world. With offices located in Boulder and Hanoi, we are able to pursue projects throughout South and Southeast Asia and North and South America. We have transformed from a water-focused organization into an NGO that works on a range of climate change resilience and disaster risk reduction activities, including:Providing technical expertise on disaster and climate resilience;Implementation of resilience building programs; Providing training on disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, and resilience; andConducting forensic post-disaster analysis. Much of ISET-International's recent work and research has focused on urban areas. The world is urbanizing at an incredible pace at the same time that climate change is changing the risk landscape, intensifying old risks and creating new ones. To meet these challenges, it is critical that we close the gap between on-the-ground adaptation and resilience needs and global knowledge and capacity. ISET-International works in this space, building strong connections and functioning as the 'backbone' that brings diverse groups together to bridge gaps and share information. As illustrated above and in Part III of the 990, our program service activities are critical and directly benefit the general public on a continuing basis. ISET-International is organized and operated to attract new and additional public support on a continuous basis. Funding for the Institute is primarily obtained through grants and contributions by various U.S. and international organizations. The Institute receives a significant portion of its support from large grants made by a small number of private organizations. The grantor organizations vary from year to year. While certain large grants from private organizations may continue in the near term, this support is crucial to the support of the program service activities that accomplish the overall exempt purpose. Finally, the governing body represents the broad interest of the public, with no one individual or group of individuals having undue control or influence over the organization's funding or affairs. Each board member brings important skill sets, specialized knowledge, qualifications and expertise that help the organization plan and achieve its strategic objectives. ISET-International qualifies as a publicly supported organization under the facts and circumstances test set forth in Treas. Reg. 1.170A-9(f)(3). The public support exceeded the 10 percent threshold for public charities. Furthermore, the sources of support, governing body and programs it conducts all demonstrate sufficient public support to meet the facts and circumstances test.
