Mission

SWCI provides supports and training for local members of the disability and aging communities to live the lives they want in Southwest Colorado.

SWCI envisions a world where envisions a world where people with disabilities and those who are aging are respected included members of their communities, making their own choices, directing the supports and services they need to live well in the community, and giving back to the community through their strengths.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The Form 990 is sent to the board of dirctors prior to their next regular meeting. The board of directors reviews and approves the Form 990 at that meeting. Board of directors' approval occurs prior to the filing the Form 990.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The conflicts of interest policy covers SWCIs executive officers, board of directors, staff, volunteers and executive director. Persons covered by this policy will annually disclose or update to the Chairman of the Board of Directors their interest that could give rise to conflicts of interest, such as a list of family members, substantial business or investment holdings, and other transactions or affiliations with businesses and other organization or those of family members. For each conflict of interest disclosed to the Chairman of the Board of Directors, the Chairman will determine whether to:(a) Take no action;(b) Assure full disclosure to the Board of Directors and other individuals covered by this policy;(c) Ask the person to recuse from participation in related discussions or decisions within SWCI; or(d) Ask the person to resign, become subject to possible removal in accordance with SWCIs removal procedures.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

The Board of Directors reviews and approves the Executive Directors annual salary, with no participation by the Executive Director or other interested persons. The Executive Directors salary is established using comparable data for similarly qualified persons in functionally comparable positions at similar nonprofits; consideration of roles and responsibilities of the Executive Director; and cost of living data. Comparable market data is obtained from salary surveys of other independent living centers located within the State of Colorado. Discussions and decisions regarding the compensation are documented in the Board of Directors meeting minutes. The Executive Directors also receives reimbursements for routine, reasonable, and documented expenses incurred during the year under an accountable plan. The Executive Director travels throughout the state and our service area. The Organization has a travel policy that caps reimbursement levels and requires low-budget travel.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15B

A line item budget is approved by the Board of Directors annually. The Board approves the overall salaries and benefit expenses. Discussions and decisions regarding the budget are documented in Board meeting minutes. The Executive Directors reviews and approves the salaries of other officers or key employees, with no participation by the interested persons, in accordance with the annual budget approved by the Board. The Executive Director establishes salaries using comparable data for similarly qualified persons in functionally comparable positions at similar nonprofits; consideration of roles and responsibilities of the officer or key employee; and cost of living data. Comparable market data is obtained from salary surveys of other independent living centers located within the State of Colorado. The Board of Directors serve on a voluntary basis and receive no compensation.

Part X : FIN48 Footnote

The Organization has received tax-exempt status under Code Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Organization has adopted accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America as they relate to uncertain tax positions for the year ended June 30, 2025 and had evaluated its tax positions taken for all open tax years subject to examination by the Internal Revenue Service and Colorado Department of Revenue. The Organization is not currently under audit nor has the Organization been contacted by any of these jurisdictions. Management believes that the activities of the Organization are within their tax-exempt purpose, and that there are no uncertain tax positions.

As a certified Center for Independent Living, we provide supports and services to help people become more independent and more included. We work together on the issues people bring us, from finding housing to making friends or starting a business. We provide assistance through information, referral, options counseling, independent living skills training, peer support, teaching people to advocate for themselves, and systems advocacy to break down barriers, and assistance with emancipation and deinstitutionalization.

Comparable market data is obtained from salary surveys of other independent living centers located within the State of Colorado. Discussions and decisions regarding the compensation are documented in the Board of Directors meeting minutes. The Executive Directors also receives reimbursements for routine, reasonable, and documented expenses incurred during the year under an accountable plan. The Executive Director travels throughout the state and our service area. The Organization has a travel policy that caps reimbursement levels and requires low-budget travel.
