The western colorado interpretive association was organized to assist the us forest service, bureau of land management and other government agencies in scientific, educational, historical and interpretive activities of the resource areas in western colorado. Through these efforts visitors to the public lands can better understand the area and it is hoped, develop a sense of value and desire to ensure their protection and sustainable use for current and future generations.

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 28

The association has taken over the operations of fort uncompahgre living history museum located in delta, colorado and is working closely with the national old spanish trail organization to create an interpretive site at the fort that will connect the fur trappying history with the history of the north branch of the old spanish trail that came through the area. The old spanish national historic trail was designated in 2002 as "the longest, most crookest and arduous pack mule route in the history of america". The old spanish trail is administered by the bureau of land management and national park service.

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 29

Archaeologists from alpine archaeological consultants, inc. And the usfs - grand mesa, uncompahgre and gunnison national forests, with volunteers from the colorado archaeological society - chipeta chapter and the interpretive association of western colorado, are currently conducting an excavation at an historic homestead in the uncompahgre national forest. The homestead was occupied between 1906 and 1930. The association is documenting the economic and social trends of the family and how those trends are seen in the archaeological record.

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 30

The route to find a route across colorado to the west led to a thoroughfare of prospectors and entrepreneurs. Now this rout attracts visitors with alluring vistas, wild adventures, lively recreation and intriguing historical sites. The interpretive signage project runs approximately 55 miles and allows for nine safe view stops to provide the traveller with information about some of colorado's most compelling scenic beauty, geologic features and cultural landscapes. The interpretations provide context how the landscapes have evolved over time.

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 31

To assist the us forest service, bureau of land management, and other agencies in scientific, educational and interpretive activities of the resource areas of western colorado.
