Additional Explanations

FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Safehouse denver assists adults, children, and youth in reclaiming their right to a life free from domestic violence. The agency provides a broad spectrum of culturally competent , trauma informed services including: emergency shelter; safety planning; individual counseling; personal advocacy; support groups; parenting sessions; legal advocacy; a 24-hour crisis and information line. Services are available through the non- residential counseling and advocacy center as well as through the emergency shelter. Safehouse denver also increases community awareness and accountability for the intervention in, and prevention of, domestic violence through its community education activities.

Form 990

Form 990: part i, line 5; part v, line 2a; part vii, section a, line 1a safehouse denver has a coemployment relationship with a peo company, intandem human resources and as such does not submit forms w-2 under the safehouse name and federal id number. Salaries paid through the peo company are reflected as if they were paid by safehouse denver for the purpose of functional expenses and compensation information.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 2

During fiscal year, safehouse denver made the decision to terminate community education as a standalone program. Although community education continues to be an important function, it is no longer directly staffed. Community education is provided by employees of the family and, counseling and advocacy programs and the development department as part of their on- going services. During the fiscal year a new service was added called the ;extended stay program ("esp"). Safehouse denver purchased a six apartment building which will be used to provide a short-term housing opportunity bridging the gap between emergency services and self-sufficiency. This will provide a safe environment with additional time to access long-term housing, employment, childcare and other self-sufficiency-related resources. This will also allow safehouse denver to serve more individuals in crisis as beds are more quickly vacated by those moving to the esp.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 3

Both the elimination of the community education program and the addition of esp affect the functional allocation of expenses for the fiscal year ending march 31, 2018. Direct costs related to the community education program were reallocated to the other remaining programs and to esp. Since the apartment building for esp was purchased in december 2017 with the full program expected to be launched in june 2018, allocated costs for the last fiscal year are lower than those anticipated in the future when the program is fully operational. At that point, allocated costs are expected to be comparable to those of the other programs.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4D

Children's program includes personal advocacy, educational assistance, and therapeutic play and intervention groups that support children in developing safety plans, conflict resolution skills, and developing healthy relationships. Expenses 159,837. During the fiscal year ending march 31, 2018, safehouse purchased a six unit apartment building at a cost of 1,000,000. A new program, the extended stay program (esp)which will be housed in this building will open in summer 2018. The program will provide safe, independent housing for emergency housing residents who are out of acute crisis but in need of additional time to access long-term housing and other resources related to self-sufficiency. An esp case manager will assist in this process. Esp residents will also have access to the full range of services from the counseling and advocacy program. The average length of stay will be 60 - 90 days. 45,405

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Page 2, Part V, Line 4

Education--santone permanently restricted funds transferred to a beneficial interest in community first foundation.

Schedule D, Page 3, Part X

Safehouse follows accounting for uncertainty in income taxes, which clarifies the accounting and reporting for uncertainties in income tax law. The standard prescribes a recognition threshold and measurement attribute for the financial statement recognition and measurement of a tax position taken or expected to be taken in a impact of the tax position if that position will more likely than not be sustained on audit, based on the technical merits of the position. The standard also provides guidance related to de-recognition, classification, and interest and penalties. During the years ended march 31, 2018 and 2017, safehouse performed an evaluation of uncertain tax positions and did not note any matters that would require recognition or which may have an effect on its tax-exempt status.
