COPAL'S MISSION IS TO UNITE MINNESOTA'S LATINX COMMUNITY IN ACTIVE GRASSROOTS COMMUNAL DEMOCRACY THAT BUILDS RACIAL, GENDER, SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE ACROSS COMMUNITY LINES. THE NEED FOR THIS WORK QUICKLY GREW, AND COPAL QUICKLY LAUNCHED TO ORGANIZE THE LATINX COMMUNITY AND ALLIES AROUND ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH DRAMATIC SHIFTS IN IMMIGRATION POLICY AND GROWING INCIDENTS OF HATE AND HATEFUL RHETORIC DIRECTED AT THE LATINX COMMUNITY AND BROADER IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES LIVING IN MINNESOTA. AFTER TWO YEARS OF WORKING UNDER A FISCAL SPONSORSHIP WITH TAKEACTION MN, COPAL SUCCESSFULLY REGISTERED OVER FIVE THOUSAND PLEDGES TO VOTE FROM LATINXS IN THE 2018 ELECTIONS, AND SUPPORT HUNDREDS MORE IN BECOMING CITIZENS. AS OF 2020, COPAL NOW OPERATES WITHOUT A FISCAL SPONSOR, AND HAS SECURED BOTH 501(C)3 AND 501(C)4 STATUSES. TO REACH ITS MANY GOALS, COPAL CULTIVATES CIVIC PARTICIPATION AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AMONG ITS CONSTITUENTS AT ALL STAGES OF ENGAGEMENT. COPAL ASKS PEOPLE WHAT THEY ARE INTERESTED IN AND CONCERNED ABOUT, AND HELPS PEOPLE CONNECT TO CAUSES THAT THEY CARE ABOUT. COPAL'S CORE ENGAGEMENT STRATEGIES INCLUDE VOTER ENGAGEMENT AND EDUCATION, CITIZENSHIP TRAINING AND EDUCATION, ACTIVIST TRAINING, LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, AND LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY AROUND LATINX ISSUES SUCH AS TPS AND DACA, AND ARE ALL ALIGNED WITH WHAT THE LATINX COMMUNITY HAS REQUESTED COPAL ADVANCES. IN 2020, COPAL FOCUSED ITS WORK ACROSS FIVE IMPACT AREAS: IMMIGRATION: POPULAR EDUCATION INFUSED CITIZENSHIP CLASSES COMBINED WITH VOLUNTEER LAWYER NETWORK APPLICATION ASSISTANCE. COPAL ALSO WORKS IN COALITION WITH MANY ORGANIZATIONS TO ADDRESS A GROWING NUMBER OF ISSUES IMPACTING THE MINNESOTA LATINX COMMUNITY. DEMOCRACY 2050: TURNING OUT RECORD MINNESOTA LATINX PARTICIPATION IN THE 2020 ELECTIONS AND CENSUS, COPAL CONDUCTS EXTENSIVE ORGANIZING CAMPAIGNS, MOBILIZING VOLUNTEERS FOR PHONE-BANKING WORK, AND SECURING VOTER REGISTRATIONS, PLEDGES TO VOTE, AND PARTICIPATION IN THE CENSUS. CLIMATE CHANGE ORGANIZING: EDUCATING AND ACTIVATING LATINX-LED CLIMATE JUSTICE AND CLIMATE JUSTICE CONSTITUENCY THE TWIN CITIES, BY HOLDING LISTENING SESSIONS, TRAINING LEADERS AND PURSUING PASSAGE OF A RACIAL JUSTICE AND EQUITY ASSESSMENT BILL AT THE MN STATE LEGISLATURE. EDUCATION ORGANIZING: ORGANIZING AND SUPPORTING MINNEAPOLIS PUBLIC SCHOOL (MPS) PARENTS IN THE PURSUIT OF ENHANCED SCHOOL COMMUNICATION WITH LATINX PARENTS, ENHANCED ACCESS, AND COORDINATION WITH THE MPS LANGUAGE SERVICES, AND THE CREATION OF AN "OFFICE OF LATINX ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT". LEADERSHIP TRAINING: ONGOING LEADERSHIP 101 WORKSHOPS AND CUSTOMIZED TRAININGS TO EMPOWER LATINX COMMUNITY MEMBERS WITH THE SKILLS AND STRATEGIES TO PURSUE LATINX FRIENDLY PUBLIC POLICY AND SYSTEMS CHANGE EFFORTS THROUGH A RACIAL/EQUITY LENS.
