“Foundations Mission statementInside Outside Circle empowers system-impacted people to lead change from within by providing opportunities for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people to heal and serve both themselves and others. We exist to reduce recidivism and all forms of violence - physical, emotional, and psychological - in our prisons and communities. Our recitivism rate is under 10% and our graduates dont simply survive on the outside, they thrive - regularly acting as mentors and leaders within their communities. The current leadership structure of our organization underscores this point. Our more recent success bringing our work to at-risk and incarcerated youth, the formerly incarcerated, and adults on probabation points to our ability to generate similar results outside an adult maximum-security setting. Some highlights include: Formerly incarcerated program graduates run our organization. They demonstrate to their peers and the world that change is possible - that we can reduce mass incarceration if we address the root cause driving much criminal behavior at the appropriate scale with the appropriate people. Foundations Programs:Continued to replicate the success of our original program within California State Prison-Sacramento, while expanding to include youth facilities.In partnership with the Annie E. Casey Foundations juvenile justice strategy group, we are supporting the integration of our model as the core of their approach to reform the juvenile justice system at the national level. We developed a partnership with continuity consulting to bring elements of our approach to the California Department of Juvenile Justice in support of training youth peer mentors. Pre covid, we were able to conduct 3 community events to engage in advocacy and in the midst of the pandemic, we have been able to pivot towards engaging system impacted individuals, both incarcerated and in the community, while also creating opportunities to hold online public events on a weekly basis, as well beginning an online training process for formerly incarcerated individuals to continue our mission of empowering system impacted folks and growing the ability to serve more people. The long-term goal is to be able to continue the successful support begun in folsom and expand that into the culture outside of prison to interrupt the schools to prison pipeline and contribute to a less violent society on all levels. - Inside Circle Intensive: Detailed in the award-winning documentary entitled,The Work, this program invites members of the public into New Folsom Prison to engage in group-healing intensives alongside incarcerated men. Serving as a powerful bridge between worlds, participants explore fear, prejudice, and the barriers they erect to protect themselves.- Outside Circle Intensive:Extending our work beyond prison walls,Outside Circle Intensivesprovide a platform for graduates of our Folsom Group to continue the work they started while incarcerated and share their lived experience as facilitators with the public. These intensives are open to all men, women, and the gender non-conforming. - Film Screening:Our film screenings and question and answer panel discussions are highly impactful experiences that serve as a powerful vehicle for building cultural competency and supporting emotional literacy in a variety of settings corporate, educational and institutional. We hope they inspire you to look within and see beyond labels like inmate.- Speaking & Facilitation: Inspiring opportunity youth, guiding dialogue, and lending meaningful perspective on social justice issues and topics like diversity, equity and inclusion, our facilitators are powerful and articulate speakers in any setting. We get audiences engaged and groups connected.”
