Mission

The mission of ALP is to improve the reading, writing, and spelling skills of young, aspiring readers in under-resourced communities by providing free, long-term, one-on-one instruction from highly trained tutors.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Line 4: Description of Significant Changes to Organizational Documents

Changes to ALP governing documents included various administrative clarifications including (1) The term of office for the Chairperson was increased to be generally two years (although it may be a single year if so determined by the board), renewable for one additional year, but not to exceed a total of three consecutive years. (2) The position Vice Chairperson was changed to an optional officer position which may be elected and appointed by the board annually; the Vice Chairperson may serve consecutive terms not to exceed three years; The election of a Vice Chairperson may be made as part of a slate of officers, or separately at any time, provided however, that the Vice Chairpersons term shall expire on the succeeding June 30 regardless of his/her date of election without any requirement that a Vice Chairperson be elected for the following Fiscal year. (3) Updates to succession roles and powers and duties of officers in the event that an officer may be either absent or unable to act, including establishing rules for appointment by the board of an interim officer, should such a situation arise. (4) Update to certain duties and authority of the Executive Director including Executive Director Job Description.

The Form 990 was prepared by the organizations outside accounting firm and a detail review was performed by Management and the Finance committee; discussions were held with the Executive committee. A copy of the 990 was provided to the full board prior to filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 12C: Explanation of Monitoring and Enforcement of Conflicts

The organization monitors and enforces its Conflict of Interest policy in accordance with the policys provisions, as follows: Each Insider has a duty to place the interest of the Organization foremost in any dealing with the Organization and has a continuing responsibility to comply with the requirements of this Policy. Promptly following the adoption of this Policy, and annually thereafter, each Insider shall acknowledge his or her familiarity with this Policy and shall disclose in writing to the Chairperson of the Board any existing financial or other material interests subject to this Policy, of which he or she has knowledge, that he or she reasonably expects to have in any proposed or existing Arrangement with the Organization, or in any other matter under consideration or to be considered by the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee, or any other Board Committee by completing a Conflict of Interest Disclosure Statement. The Conflict of Interest Disclosure Statements shall be reviewed by the Chairperson of the Board or his or her designee. Any issues not previously disclosed shall be referred by him or her to the Board or appropriate Committee. The Conflict of Interest Disclosure Statements shall be retained in the confidential files of the Chairperson of the Board or his or her designee.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 15A: Compensation Review & Approval Process - CEO, Top Management

In determining the compensation for the Executive Director, the Chairperson of the Board, Chair of the Governance Committee, and Chair of the Finance Committee review information obtained from the NC Center for Nonprofits Salary Survey. Specifically, the group focuses on data for Executive Directors of organizations of similar size and budget. This information, coupled with an assessment of the Executive Director's leadership of the organizational growth and program results, leads the group to an agreed upon level of compensation. A growth plan has been established to ensure Executive Director compensation is comparable to like-size agencies; data is reviewed annually.

IRS990/Desc0Augustine Literacy Project - Charlotte (ALP) was originally founded in 2005 as a mission of St. Peters Episcopal Church and became a separate and independent organization in 2018. Following our mission, we improve the reading, writing and spelling skills of low-income students significantly behind grade level in literacy skills. We train and support volunteer tutors who provide free, long-term, one-to-one instruction to students using a research-based phonics curriculum. Our volunteers tutor primarily in Charlotte-Mecklenburg area elementary schools, working with first- through third-graders at Title I schools. Volunteer tutors receive 20+ hours of training, and each tutor provides one-on-one tutoring two times per week to a child during the school day or in an after-school enrichment program. Our long-term, one-on-one tutoring approach provides benefits to both the children and the tutors: Tutor one child, change two lives.In order to maximize our ability to connect volunteers and students, ALP offers both in-person and virtual mode to deliver our lesson plan. As Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, our community and our other partners rise to meet the challenge of a large percentage of first through third grade students testing significantly behind in reading skills, we continue to offer virtual programming as a way to maximize the number of students served. Our 2021-2022 results include over 8,000 tutoring sessions, around 20% of which were conducted using the virtual method; 228 students received tutoring. 94% of students who received tutoring improved in letter/sound correspondence, word attack and spelling skills. Average improvement, for students with pre and post assessment, in word decoding is 1.2 grades and spelling is 1.3 grades.
